CaringandReal -> What is your favorite piece of classical music? (9/5/2009 6:22:30 PM)

I am partial to waltzes.

Short: Blue Dambue

Long: Der Fledermaus (instrumental versions only)

My father was a musician (classical violinist and jazz bass player) and I heard a lot of classical music (and jazz) growing up. I liked the classical, didn't appreciate the jazz so much. When I was four, I used to invent plays to Der Fledermaus and get my sisters to dance-act them out with me. I never lost my love for that piece of music.

What is your favorite classical piece? (I'm always looking for good music suggestions.) And please tell the story of how you ran across it!

The Requiem Mass in D minor of Mozart is magnificient, without a doubt. But there's a certain movement, which is quite known, bears a indescrible awe. It's Lacrimosa.

And Death Is The Road To Awe by Clint Mansell can't be forgotten when we talk about awe.

Those are just favourite ones.

i sing Lacrymosa around the house while cleaning....that and Dies Irae....perfect housecleaning Music. Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah both inspire me to scrub harder lol.

Canon in D for classical, or Ancient Airs and Dances

For Opera, it would be Nessun Dorma

Today my favorites are:
Poulenc - Concerto for organ, strings & timpani in G minor
Saint-Saens - Symphony #3 (Organ)
Widor - Toccata from Symphony No 5 (Organ)

and for good tension relief there is always:
Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5 the 4th movement.  It has a nice soothing middle section before it comes to a crashing finish.

der fledermaus is a great piece and i enjoyed the opera immensely. in regard to my favorites, the list is long. but these have touched me in a way that is profoundly personal and have a special place in my heart.

samuel barber - adagio for strings
the music speaks to me and i believe this is when i really began to connect on a very personal level with classical pieces.

joshua bell - anna's theme (from the red violin soundtrack)
when i heard this one i remembered the longing. words were unnecessary because the pain was right there. beckoning you closer.

un bel di - maria callas
i had to include this because it is my favorite and echoes the beauty of how one person can bring a song to life. she put her soul in her voice and this piece captured the essence of butterfly completely.

i see a lot of myself in all of them. nice thread op!

I have to say Bolero.....actually, most anything by any of the great masters......but when I listen, it's more based on what the actual instruments that seem to be the foremost in the music.  I love classical piano, and strings.  Horns are okay, but again, I have to be in the mood.  Yeah, ok, I'm a little strange that way!

Lucylastic -> RE: What is your favorite piece of classical music? (9/6/2009 4:44:10 AM)

Johann Pachelbel - Canon in D Major
J. Strauss - Emperor Waltz
Handel , Arrival of the Queen of Sheba
there are just so many to choose from tho

Beethoven's Ode to Joy

That's the about the only piece of classical I can listen to and enjoy in its' original form. However, almost everything Trans-Siberian Orchestra "covers" is music I can really get into.

Not at all.  Most of us need to be in the mood to be horny.

A Fifth of Beethoven by Transmutator (ok that isn't classical exactly[:D])
