In another thread, a poster stated that they were an atheist and as such the number of atheists in the US was important to him. The first thing that popped into my head was "Why?". Why would it make any difference to you how many atheists (or Muslims or Pentecostals, etc.) there are in the US or the world? Does the number of people with a similar view validate your ideas? Is it not sufficient that you have reached a conclusion that satisfies yourself?

So here's the basic question....does it matter to you how many people hold any given religious viewpoint, and if so why?

One word, votes. It has nothing to do with validation.

Well then, Gots, based on the numbers we are seeing, I'd say you (atheists) want to continue relying on judicial activism, rather than democracy, and I'd suggest you not get too cocky about that.

Jesus, Rich. What the fuck?

Dems, Pubs, Liberal, Conservative--all have done their best to twist the courts into reflecting their bias.

Know what's really at issue here? Some people of faith have so little faith that they're threatened by the existence of people who manage to live just fine without the faith those people of faith find indispensable--so nonbelief becomes it's own faith.

It's why it comes up and up and up and up and up.

Well when applied to a cohesive cult of some sort this makes sense, but surely you don't think that atheists will ever vote as a block.

Fortunately we live in a republic not a democracy and I continue to rely on that. Also, it seems like being part of a motivated minority gets one a disproportional say in government, so I care about the size and motivation of my minority.

What the fuck, yourself, Tim?

We are talking about less than a tenth of the population, and efforts to dictate the phrasing on our money!  The ACLU is posturing to sue the fuck out of a city near me because of a word that might be uttered in an invocation before city council meetings.

The angry, angry, atheists are sue-happy pricks, who ain't got the votes to win anything.  Did you miss the response to why numbers were wanted?

Lol, I don't know that atheists could ever manage to organize voting the way certain christian groups do. Maybe certain subgroups, I suspect that at least some people would follow the lead of say Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris. But I'm talking about a demographic that can be relied upon for example not to vote for Sarah Palin.

You know, oddly enough I have never really considered a candidates religious views when deciding to vote for them or not. Could just be that we don't make as much of a big deal about it up here in the frozen wastes.

Well actually our current Prime Minister, Steven Harper, is a Biblical creationist, he believes the Bible is factually correct in all matters, he believes that homosexuality is the basest of sins, and that abortion is immoral. Yet somehow none of that colours his policies. We still have abortion pretty much on demand, gay marriages, and no death penalty. Somehow it just doesn't seem to matter as much up here...he was elected to do a job, and he is doing that job....imposing his religious beliefs on the country is not in the job description, so he hasn't tried to do it, despite pressure from some of his creationist brethren....there isn't even a serious attempt to teach alternatives to evolution. Actually I feel a new thread idea coming out of this...stay tuned
