Actually, 4% per month, compounded monthly is 60%.  (1+.04)^12 = 1.6

(Well....actually...i't's 1.604178).

The bill is $70 weather I use one drop or an ocean.  We are not on meters yet.

Based on these replies- I gather 4% is the usual and customary late fee?

Anyhow- I ran out and bought a steak for dinner.  As well as 15 gourmet chocolate bars. A few jars of cashew nuts.  I now will make an appointment to sell a kidney, and to sell blood.

Silver is up 1.32%   today.

It's too bad you are not metered. I pay (one person, 2 cats!) about $40/month for water, sewer and garbage pick-up. If I am late the fee is 10% (yes, 10%). My water bill automatically comes out of my checking acct each month, viola, no late fees!!!.

I pay myself first (401k), tithe and pay my bills. I get to spend AFTER all that. Skip the "investing (in quotes only because late fees are probably greater than any gain you are getting)" before those things are done.

pahunkboy - your story seems to keep changing -- now its you had to replace a fridge, earlier it was yo wanted to buy silver or whatever, and you keep indicating you don't have the money but then you do and you want to use it for something else etc.

Since i have autopay or pay my bills on time, nope the late fee means nothing to me - never even considered checking them out because i know my bills will be paid on time. So no, its not relevant TO ME, as if i am that irresponsible that i want to PLAN to pay something late so i need to be prepared to know what the late fees are. This whole thread seems to be you thinking companies should cater to your wanting to pay them late and do everything possible to accomodate you in this decision. Why would it be relevant the COMPANY EXPECTS YOU TO PAY YOUR BILLS ON TIME. They have no obligation to cater to those who pay them late.

See i have a list of bills that come out of each pay check -- and i have a max i know some will be like my electric fluctuates but i have a cap of 100 a month as its never been more than 70 since i have lived here for 7 years. Before i spend anything on food or fun stuff, i take my paycheck and subtract ALL bills for that paycheck including paying into savings. THEN what is left over is mine to by food, necessities, fun, gas, extras. My savings is usually for the emergencies or if i know i have to pay for something that is not flexible, i figure out how much i need to save extra and put that money away until such time i need it. (Hint, when you over estimate what a fluctuating bill will be, when the bill is LESS than the max, you then have extra money.)

Are there people who have no choice but to pay late because they literally do not have the money, yes, and the companies tend to try and work with these people when the people show a good faith effort, not PLAN to pay it late because he wants to pay himself first to gamble with the money he should be paying his bills with.

The concept here that you don't seem to be getting is responsibility. Your choosing to pay something late can in fact HARM a company. They are providing you in good faith a service and you are PLANNING upon screwing them and not paying them on time which screws up their books and if everyone decided to do so the company would be in trouble as it then couldn't pay ITS bills because its dependent upon people who they provide service TO, to pay them as they AGREED TO when they signed up for the service.

Sorry but you seem to believe this services are your RIGHT and you can pay them when you feel like it instead of seeing that it isn't your right but a business agreement. BE glad there are late fees -- instead of whinging about them -- instead of the company deciding if you don't pay you don't get their service.

In the end to me, it comes down to the integrity of people and how seriously they take their commitments.

My dearest Angel,

Lets hope that when you hit your 40s your short term memory works spot on.  As mine does not.

The water company works for me- me and the folks of my fair city.  As such I have been in constant contact with them that water fluoridation is not acceptable.   I do not want my water fluoridated.

I will come back to this later.

In the time that I lived in PA which is now 20 years, I have had relatively no worries as far as bills go. I lived in Chicago and it was a chronic worry there.

What I dont like is being the attitude that I am a deadbeat.  Not as it pertains to needed living expenses.

I resent that pontificating here as well as the attitude I got from the public servant.

So- I have taken the matter up with the PA PUC.

I am the citizen.  I will be treated as such.  I am not the hired help in the land that my ancestors made to be America.

Money is tight at the moment-Welcome to life as most live this way.

Short term memory loss.  Lets hope that doesn't happen to you.

Anyhow- I find it hard to beleive that no one here has complaints over costs of living.

Be that as it may- follow the rash of laws. It is probably illegal for me to scoop water up out of the river- as it is l.ikely illegal to harvest the water from my roof.

The water portion is just $23. But one cant pay just that- as the sewer and flood wall must be paid too.

I resent the fluoridation.

In the next 4 years- I will be able to leave here and move to where I have space- in the mean time I am just doing my time.

Anyhow-  be glad you have a good memory.

10%  Thank you.    Your reply is the best one here.  The water company has changed its terms a few times... and I never beleive it will be better-

4% is cheaper then 10%.   :-)

§ 56.22. Accrual of late payment charges.  (a)  Every utility subject to this chapter is prohibited from levying or assessing a late charge or penalty on any overdue utility bill, as defined in §  56.21 (relating to payment), in an amount which exceeds 1.5% interest per month on the full unpaid and overdue balance of the bill. aha!   1.5%.    Uh huh. That is what I thought.

A reason why this eats at me because they being a local muni- can EASILY slap a lien on my house.  Unlike the electric, Gas, or phone.   They rank up with the tax assessor.  It is too easy for them to attach the house.

pahunkboy -> RE: late fees on utilities? 4% (9/14/2009 12:23:31 PM)

Wow.  I was ranting to my mom.  She is one to complain about the taste of the water.  I thought she was dingy when she said the water tastes better at grams then at her (old) house.  Well as it turns out- she is correct!   They are served by 2 different water authorities!   ;-)

So anyhow- I have also been on my water company to stop fluoridating the water.  When I told mom this she agreed. (to my shock)  Not only do we still fluoridate- but the reading on the annual report is from 2004!!!
When I talked to the director of the Water Authority- he said it would save them money to not fluoridate.  I was astounded that we pay to poison the water.  Understand that I actually drink the water.....

One item is that they keep changing the billing as we go on.

I got to thinking last night- that I may very well have to sell some platinum to have more of a cushion for bills.  I am not as attached to that as the minor amount of gold.

Anyhow as I read the PA PUC regs- they have to follow certain rules.   I see they can also require a 2 month deposit. So it goes both ways.

I try to keep my bills lows.   On many items I am the tightwad of the century.  On other items I am a drunken sailor.  Last night I picked up some silver at a steal.   !!!    (silver will do much better then Platinum)

Someone brought up a higher paying job.
I am close to scoring that. I have some loose ends to tie up.  But am pretty close to that.

I paniced on this as for 20 years- bills were no problem.  So this is new.

I hate thinking about this.  This should be a no worry item.

I have closed out my credit cards- and simplified most of my life.

"I resent the fluoridation."

You won't when you're in your 60's.

Be happy.

(And no one suggested you were a deadbeat....you asked how to avoid late fees {"What is going on with late fees?    What are the ins and outs?"}.  It's easy:  Pay your bills on time....works like magic....don't want to pay your bills on time....pay the late fee....pick one).

pahunkboy -> RE: late fees on utilities? 4% (9/14/2009 5:07:58 PM)

Fluoridation is based on flawed science.  Many locales have stopped fluoridation.   Do some research- you might be surprised as to what you find.

A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice.

That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Well, geez, if I hadn't had well water when I was a kid, I wouldn't have had so many cavities.  So about every 15 years, my fillings go through their replacement cycle, dying one at a time.  Which is a real pain in the butt.  Or jaw.

The flouridation scare scam is one of the oldest in the books.

If you seen my teeth you would see a mess.

Fluoride is for topical application only.  Not ingestion.
