Rainfire -> Menopause, revisited (9/8/2009 3:07:40 PM)

Ok, stupid question time...... yet again. [&o]

It would appear that I am entering menopause, at least that is what my body and my doctor seem to be telling me. I don't mind, it's not like I'm planning on more babies or anything but I got to say, uhhhhh, the sweating and being hot, and not in a GOOD way, all the time is killing me. Sheesh, I get out of bed and I start sweating. It's not lack of salt intake, while not being a salt-hog, I do use it.

Has anyone found something that works for them to help decrease the sweats a little, if not a lot. Does anyone have ANY suggestions on making this a little more bearable? I always thought it was something of a joke when women talked about sweating, hot flashes and wanting to kill someone during this but now I'm finding out differently. [8|]

TIA

accept it as one of the joys of being a woman
embrace being sweaty
keep full length bath towels by the bedside if you get the night-sweats
start a meditation/anti-stress regimen...if you don't already have one in place

welcome to the "other" side.[:)]

Get yourself a walk in freezer...setup your internet, phone, computer with lots of cool drinky stuff....Ive stuck my head in the freezer more than  a few times.
I did take black cohosh which helped for a while but now it doesnt.
All I can suggest is what Beth has suggested.
Good luck hon

Some women find that taking soy helps the hot flashes.  It did nothing for me.  My doctor said the only thing that really could help was hormone replacement therapy but he's not convinced that it's entirely safe so we agreed that I wouldn't go that route.  In the meantime I've found that keeping wash cloths in the freezer helps when I get up sweating in the middle of the night.  Pressing one of those frozen cloths to my face feels soooo good.  In the winter I've stepped out onto my balcony in the middle of the night when it was freezing outside.

sleep in the nude and put the air on

I have forced menopause (hysterectomy and right ovary) and I am not on HRT. I get hot flashes but then I sleep in the nude and usually have a fan blowing on me. For the DarkSteven hotflashes, I drink iced tea and take lots of cold showers...[:D]

I found soy milk to be helpful somewhat.
SSRI's work better though.

You need to plan your clothing in layers. Bottom layer should be a really skimpy undershirt with tee over it, long sleeve over that. Strip down to the skimpy layer, wait until it cools off and then redress.

I've been really lucky in that respect. I've never had "hot flashes" or "night sweats".......now as far as wanting to kill someone, I've ALWAYS felt like that so I can't blame it on "the change"! [;)]

Real fun (not) was me crazed because of the night sweats and bad sleep and my daughter in the throes of puberty. I kept saying I should put a sign on the door warning people two crazy women lived here.

Rain, I was on a medication that caused me to sweat.

So, it might be menopause (and they can do bloodwork to check that out) but some meds do have that as a side effect.

As unpopular as it seems to be nowdays, HRT worked for me and it took care of ALL the symptoms.

For some women it helps to take the pill or having a mirena placed

andreaC -> RE: Menopause, revisited (9/14/2009 11:25:22 AM)

i can understand you very well, its something we soon or later have to go through.  From time to time, i have to keep an extra pillow case on my night table due to sweathing.  Not only the hot flashes i get, but the hormones are all over the place............ my poor Master LOLOL.

http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/

They have several teas I found helpful: Flashes Tea, Wise Woman Tea, and Women's Balancing Blend. You may have to drink 6 cups a day to feel the effects. You will find all three under the herbal tea section.

Hope this helps.
