This discussion reminds me of that scene from Domino.

Who invented this African-American "label" and to what use? It is not as if we can't see what their roots are.
( .... European asking..)

The United States government, 1977.

If it's good enough for Dr. Cornel West, it's good enough for me.  He uses the term "Black American" these days.

Wouldn't it suck to be a Black European and have to choose between "African American" and "Other" for your race? Or is the ethnicity filtered somehow so "African American" turns into "Black" for members outside the US?

I know this is totally random but..."Black" is a race/ethnicity. "African American" is a heritage/nationality combination.

African American doesn't appear as a choice here. It would probably be 'Black Other' as opposed to 'Black British'.

The problem is people have to pick one of the options and you can't account for all combinations so quite a few pick the 'not represented' option, or they also pick that if they don't like intrusive surveys that mostly do nothing for them.

Oh wow, that's cool. I guess it depends on IP address then because I just moved my location to AU from the US (I'm moving there in 2 weeks) and it still showed up as "African American"

Heh. Nevermind then!

Hmm... Would I be brown?  There are way too many ethnicities that could be covered in my color.  I am hispanic and french.  I think if I were a color it would be caffe latte.

Nah, with the French ancestry you'd definitely be cafe au lait [;)]

Hillwilliam -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 11:15:18 AM)

I had a good friend who was born in Nairobi and emigrated to the US but his skin is tan (he's Arabic)I think he has more right to call himself african/american than someone who is 10 generations removed from the continent.  Personal thought tho.  I think ALL the hyphenated-american terms only serve to divide and create resentment among our citizens at a time when we cant afford to be divided.  I mean wtf ever happened to American-Americans?  ALL of us

I've never been too keen on the "African-American" label, because my ancestors came from France to the US (by way of Quebec), and there's never a choice for me - "French-American". What's that you say? I wasn't born in France? Yeah no kidding. And most of the black people I know have never been to Africa, let alone being born there.

Pfffffffft.

Cali
Of course not, you are French Canadian...we never give up, once a Canuck always a Canuck (just ask Bill Shatner[:D]).

TurboJugend -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 11:37:03 AM)

thank you for explaining
but "black american"....mmm is weird not ( to me that is)...
- we can see that they are black
- what does the colour  matter

ps
my coloured american friends are less bothered by the naming then the "white"people are.....funny

The Australians like Americanisms and that phrase is a pure Americanism.

popeye1250 -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 1:14:52 PM)

I'm an American who just happens to be of Irish heratige.
I'm not "Irish-American." I don't know where all this hyphenated "American" stuff comes from.

pahunkboy -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 1:41:46 PM)

I used to run around with a few blacks when I lived in Chicago.  Sometimes we got funny looks.  Often in a store- I would pipe up and say.  "we are related" "we just came to get supplies for a family reunion".   LOL

Talk about shocking.   (80s)   The facial expressions were priceless!
