philosophy -> canadian politics for a change (9/10/2009 11:22:25 PM)

Just for a change, allow me to invite everyone to examine a bit of Canadian politics.

This refers to a leaked video of Prime Minister Harper. He apparently did not know he was being taped, so we can assume this is the way he really feels.

Has Harper finally got around to making the Conservatives unelectable in Quebec?

I don't see anything here. Of course he needs a majority government, another minority will only result in another early election when he is most vulnerable or a coalition between the Grits and the NDP and/or the Bloc, in which case they would indeed be propped up by socialists (the NDP are openly socialist) and separatists (isn't that the whole point of the Bloc...to work on the separation of Quebec?) .

And as for saying the Liberals would appoint “more” left ideologues to the courts, federal agencies and the Senate, well duh...do you expect the Libs (especially if in coalition with the two leftist parties) to appoint right wingers? I mean nobody is surprised that Harper appoints Conservatives to those positions are they?

As far as the Conservatives' elect-ability in Quebec, I doubt this will have any effect on it, I mean its not like the Tories have ever been anything but staunchly federalists..they got elected in Quebec because they oppose the Pequistes.

I see nothing in what he said other than what I expect Iggy told his troops...that they need a majority and that they need to defeat Harper and his boys. There is nothing in the quotes that even implies that he only views the opposition as enemies to be destroyed. Even Gilles' comment about Harper in  2004 is irrelevant, Harper didn't say that a coalition was wrong or evil, just that he thinks the Tories have to win a majority in order to prevent the Grits from taking power with a coalition. Simple common sense and politics as usual...nothing sinister or malevolent in it.
