I understand that you guys probably have your hands full with other things - site maintenence, upkeep, troublesome users etc.

But, I was wondering, have you guys ever thought about doing a CM radio station for the site? Sorry for posting this here, but I didn't know who (if anybody) to contact directly to inquire about this.

What is stopping you?  Put together a podcast.  We could have a series of podcasts....

Yeah, but podcasts weren't exactly what I had in mind. I was thinking more like a streaming audio/on demand type station.

BeIgnited -> RE: Dear Moderators 1-16 (9/11/2009 11:40:26 AM)

Streaming audio of what?

Music...

I know BTR (BlogTalkRadio, if you're not familar with it) has a digital switchboard that allows people to call in.  That might be useful later on down the road for doing shows and function announcements.

Why not just use the thousands of radio stations already available..[8|]

1. Because sometimes they suck. As in: Unreliable. Sites down. Stream is down, whatever.
2. Because in a majority of the cases, you have to sign up to use other features (like make requests/dedications.) With that said, that part is already done - the members here have already joined the site, (obviously) so they already have access to 3/4 the features available.

I can picture it now. Sound bites are whip cracks.

Sounds like a good idea... as long as present infrastructure can handle it. If it's a feature that I couldn't turn off (as I would never use it) and it slows the response time of my browser trying to visit an already slow responding site (CM), then I would not be a happy CMer.

BKSir -> RE: Dear Moderators 1-16 (9/11/2009 12:46:20 PM)

Some of the problems with having a radio station on the site would include copyright and fair use issues, especially in the case of music.  Play one Metallica song and they'll sue your ass for millions.  Maintenance, making sure someone is always there to keep an eye on it so it doesn't go down and, as you say, suck.  Cost... streams aren't expensive, but, they're not free either.  And with as many people as are on this site at any given moment, that could easily equal out to a $500/month or more.  Bandwidth, a lot of sites that have their own dedicated radio station on them, especially things like 1.fm, sky.fm, and radio station websites shell out thousands of dollars per month on hosting and bandwidth fees.  Staff, need program manager, dj's, like I noted earlier, someone watching it 24/7 so in case the stream burps or something that it's back up quickly, lawyers for the questions about "Are you paying the royalties to use this song?" that always come up, and to field "This was offensive to me and I'm going to sue you all!" that would be inevitable with any kind of talk show venue.

Don't misunderstand me, I think it's an awesome idea, and would love a radio station attached to this site, but...  expensive and a pain in the ass if they were to do it legally and correctly.

LaTigresse -> RE: Dear Moderators 1-16 (9/11/2009 1:30:53 PM)

I never have the sound on, hell my work computers, except one, don't even have speakers. I do not like extra noise..........it's all about the peace and quiet to me.

Well, you bring up a few good points, however, some streaming providers take care of the royalties in the monthly plan. (I actually used to run a radio station about a year or two ago, right around the time the royalty board jacked up the rates - that was actually why we closed down)

One server provider that comes to mind that does this, is LoudCity, but there are a plethora of other options out there. This would also address the bandwidth concerns you brought up. Most server providers offer servers at xx number of listeners @ xx kbps stream

For example, a 100 slot server, streaming at 64kbps (the bare minimum for decent quality) is 85/month

Depending on the software you use to broadcast (such as SAM) it might have an "auto start" feature. It works just like it sounds - if for some reason it detects a silence in the stream (lets say 10+ seconds) it'll automatically start the stream.

Well, it ultimately depends on how they'd deploy it. When I ran my station, if you clicked the "tune in" link, it opened up a playlist file (.pls or .m3u), which, would open up its own media player - Winamp or Windows Media Player, respectively. So, you could tune in/tune out whenever you wanted.

The only other thing they'd need is a seperate box to run the database (thats where the song collecton would be stored), broadcasting software and then they could link to it from both sides of CM - the profile side & the forum side.

Such as this?

Presenter: 'Welcome to Collarme Radio broadcasting live to you on 959MHz medium wave. You're now tuned in to the General BDSM Discussion phone in with me your host, Master Bates, and my submissive assistant Eileen Dover. Tonight we are asking you what is the difference between a sub and a slave.. we also asked what is a hard limit, a number of callers have called in and seem to want to talk about fakes.. and.... no wait. We have a number of calls coming in at the moment, so before we go on to our Golden Oldie topic for discussion let's take a couple of calls. Now on the line from Idaho we have chopmydick. Good evening chopmydick whatwould you like to talk about?
DING DING!!
Presenter: Hello? Chopmydick?
DING DING!!
Presenter: I'm sorry, it seems that chopmydick is awaiting approval and is on moderation. However next on the line we have carefulfemsub from New Jersey. Are you there careful?
carefulfemsub: I am.
Presenter: What is it that you'd like to talk to us about?
carefulfemsub: Well I admit I did call in on Willie Rogers' Ask A Master talk show but I thought I would try here.
Presenter: Okay, so go ahead. What would you like to share with the listeners?
carefulfemsub: Well I'm a 24/7 female slave who has been collared to a wonderful Master for the past six months..
Presenter: Congratulations..
carefulfemsub: Thank you. Master is everything I ever wanted and was looking for, he's loving, kind, patient, very dominant, everything you look for in a true dom..
Presenter: Okay...
carefulfemsub: But just like with every relationship there's a few small problems..
Presenter: Such as.. ?
carefulfemsub: Well I don't know his first name, I don't know where he lives, I don't even know what country he comes from, I don't know how old he is, or even what he looks like..
Presenter: Where did you meet?
carefulfemsub: On a chat program.. Now he tells me that he loves me and every day I walk five miles into the middle of a forest and five miles back just to look at myself in the reflection in the water of the lake.
Presenter: Why do you do that?
carefulfemsub: Because Master instructed me to do so.. Only he hasn't been in touch for the past few weeks, and yesterday I sprained my ankle, and it's difficult to walk, and I really don't know what I should do..
Presenter: I see. Well we can see what the other listeners have to say but I would also suggest you try calling the Don Key Show who has the Polls and Other Random Stupidity Phone In and see what the listeners have to say there. And now before we go any further I would like to introduce our Golden Oldie Topic which comes from 2004 and is what is your definition of a safe word. How do we define safe words? And what do they mean? And moving on to our next caller.....

I regret that I will not call in. People would either realize that I am the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) from outer space, or they would realize that I am not the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) from outer space; frankly, I do not know which of those two would be worse or better.

To the OP:

It would be a great idea, and if done correctly very informative, but the issues brought up here would need a lot of looking into.   I mean even Ellen's show is being sued for music used since day one....I also wonder if the site could stay free.

But if all could work out, I'd give a listen!  :>

Yeah, it can definitely get hairy. Thats why I would reccomend a place that calculates the royalty rates in the monthly fee.

Last I knew, the actual per song royalty rate was something like .0019 cents a song, per listener, per hour. But, that's probably changed.

pahunkboy -> RE: Dear Moderators 1-16 (9/11/2009 4:27:43 PM)

I will offer to sing, hum and dance for the good of the group.
