I always figured you for a small concealed dagger kinda girl...hidden in a good spot to start a rapists involuntary transgender operation if needed...

daggers are great, but if you cant be sure of positioning it correctly ( for instance.. if you're offside, or the attack comes from offside/behind.  Remember.. ribs are a bitch to account for,, ).. the sock fulla pennies is much more forgiving, as long as ya get it to the head

Thanks Cali for finding that info.  I am technically blind without my glasses.  I can see fine if something is within inches of my face but anything further than 10 feet is a blur.  No one should be without glasses if they need them.

It took me some time to write up that post and get the links, but I just want to reiterate that your glasses most likely can be replaced at no cost and you can see a doctor for your hurt arm at no cost to you.  Please check out the links above.

OMG! i am so sorry to hear of your misfortune.....it is a really scary, and unsafe, world these days
something similar happened to me a couple of years ago....right outside the building where i live, early evening, but dark outside.
i was not beaten like you were, but was thrown onto the ground (the person came up from behind me) and i hit so hard, i thought i broke my right arm. i managed to sit up, but was unable to stand up. my whole life disappeared in 2 seconds, as my purse was ripped out my hand...not a lot of cash, but all my credit cards, and bank card and check book, and my SOCIAL SECURITY CARD (big mistake on my part carrying that with me) After awhile 2 young men, out walking, stopped to help me (i was so scared when they approached, i yelled " please dont hurt me!"), but they were truly wanting to help. One of them went to ring one of my neighbor's bell, and the other one stayed with me. And when i told him what happened, he said "OMG!, i saw a guy running and watched as he jumped into a red car, which was already moving"
Some of my neighbors came out and someone called 911. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and was kept there for a couple of days (for observation). As far as my arm goes, my shoulder was dislocated and they had to put me out in the OR to reset it (the pain was excruciating)
The police, who were also on the scene, advised me to not go out at night alone...."its too dangerous". i try to heed that advice (and have since given up a couple of things in the evening...to be safe). It's really a bummer to have to live in fear of that happening again! But *sigh* better safe than sorry.
Again, i am very sorry to hear about what happened to you, and i hope you never have to experience that again!
p.s....i hope this post gets in the right place....i have only posted here a couple of times before [;)]

I would reiterate what Cali told you, LS... Go see the doctor, and file a police report. List -everything- that you lost, including the manuscript. Our local Crime Victim program even gave my daughter something towards the art journal lost when she was stabbed (in her own bedroom--the guy had apparently been stalking her for a while) last winter. It didn't replace her work, but it did validate that the work had value. All her medical bills, the ambulance, and her therapy were paid (she 'fell off' our insurance when she chose to put off going to school after turning 19), plus they reimbursed her for lost wages and physical therapy.

PLEASE file the necessary paperwork and get the help you need!!!

Dame Calla

I did file a police report, immediately after it happened. Turns out that in Hayward, they're not all that helpful. While I was bleeding all over the BART parking lot, I got to listen to a half hour argument between Hayward Police and BART Police as to which one had to take the report due to jurisdiction. BART Police claimed their jurisdiction ended where the stairs began, while Hayward Police claimed their jurisdiction ended where the stairs ended. THAT took about twenty or so minutes for them to finish arguing before anyone actually came over and helped me look for my glasses that had been ripped from my face (which meant I couldn't find them); they had been thrown into the foliage near the stairs, so it took a long time to find what was left of them.

To be honest, I'm pretty much scared to death of where I live right now, so looking for places here isn't working so well for me. The guys that did this to me seem to be on a continuous rampage against humanity because I'm pretty sure they were the suspects in a bus robbery just yesterday, and they attacked a man and his girlfriend a few days ago as well. This is all within a few blocks of where I live.

Lost medical coverage when I lost my job (was working in Korea but they stopped paying me cause they figured they could get away with it). Been having a doozy of a time finding another job since back in the states, but I keep having to tell myself I'll find one, and I'm sure I will.

Generally, I've been a pretty self-sufficient person. This just threw me off my game. I'll get over it; it just takes some time. Until then, can't really move my right arm cause it causes serious pain, and my head has been aching off and on ever since I returned home from that incident. And it's been a few weeks now.

If things work out well, I'll get out of Hayward and find a much safer place to live. Where I'm at right now is not conducive to future living.

I am so sorry that this happened to you.  And the psychological damage does last a long time.  Don't let these thugs take your confidence and courage.  Live one day at a time and reach out for the support you need.  Many of us are up at late hours if you need to talk.

Cali,

Thank you so much for the information posted.  I know a woman here who needs some help after her car was set on fire by some neighborhood hooligans.

I wish you would have had a katana sword....and that kid from Johns Hopkins with you. Then you could have at least "blood trailed" the criminals! Sorry for your misfortune. They stole peace of mind from you. THAT is the worst.

Thank you. I've been slowly bouncing back. A representative of the City of Hayward came to visit me yesterday, apologizing for what happened to me. It was somewhat surreal. They had all read the article in the paper, and they wanted to tell me that everyone in the office was moved, some two dozen people who all signed a card that was addressed to me. She told me that they had all been aware of the many muggings that have been happening, but never realized the impact or the emotions involved until they read my column.

Today, I was given a drive to the local shopping area by a friend and dropped off. It was really the first time I've been out alone in some time since the attack. I went to take the bus back, and for the first time in awhile I struck up a conversation with a local guy who was getting on the same bus. It was a great fifteen-twenty minutes conversation that continued on the bus ride back. For a short while, I felt like the old Duane, not this one that has been apprehensive about being around other people.

So, I'm slowly bouncing back.

I also leave tomorrow for Michigan. I ended up getting a job there at a place where I used to work before going back to school for another graduate degree. I got hired at a better position than I had before because it actually needed the MA I just received. I'm taking the Amtrak train, because I've never been on an Amtrak train across the country. I show up for a health screening at work on Wednesday and start officially the following Monday.

Sorry to hear about that. I can relate a little bit as it happened to me 4 years ago, though in a little different context. Nevertheless I was just about to get out of my financial troubles and onto my feet and that did push me right back into it coming into the situation that I needed huge financial help from my partner at that time to be able to pay my rent  and it took me ages to reach that stage again where I had just been at that time. And I totally agree to

as the cops didn't bother, despite the fact that it would not have been difficult at all to find out who he was.

Also he got mugged twice in the last 3 years since he moved...before he was living just the other side of that main road and he had never been mugged in years.

I hope you get your glasses sorted as I already hate it when I can't find mine straight away in the morning (as at times they end up on the floor or wherever, no clue what  I am doing throughout the night) and would go nuts without them.

Your recent experience should encourage me more to get for my next eyetest...as then I would at least have spare ones at home if worst would come to worst.

Best wishes with your recovery and I hope you will get better soon (job wise, too).

Have you tried the VA since you are a veteran? They should be able to help you out.

cloudboy -> RE: I got mugged and here's a link to the published article about it (9/19/2009 5:36:26 PM)

In juxtaposition to your story, BALTIMORE is abuzz with a Johns Hopkins Student who killed a burglar - intruder with a samurai sword.

One would hope for a happy medium between your experience and the above.

I hope you can bounce back, and I'm sorry for what happened. Best wishes.

And the boyfriend also ought to be shot. She's lucky she was just robbed, it could have been worse.

I'd be breaking up with him, after i smacked him around like the robbers did me.

littles *big hugs* I'm sorry hone. But look at you now! Now you have a good job you start on monday! Everything will be going up from here![:D][:D][:D]

Yeah, the V.A. has all kinds of stuff but when I've told guys to look into it they never do for some reason.

The crime is one of the reasons why I left Chicago.
