Toppingfrmbottom -> How come sometimes even after drinking plenty H20 your toung still feels like its coated in sand? (9/14/2009 10:33:04 AM)

There's times where I could drink 5 bottles of water all at once one right after the other but my tounge still feels coated  in cotton, wolly and very thirsty and dry.

"Unquenchable Thirst: If it feels like you can't get enough water and you're drinking much more than usual, it could be a sign of diabetes, especially if it seems to go hand in hand with frequent urination. If your body is pulling extra water out of your blood and you're running to the bathroom more, you will become dehydrated and feel the need to drink more to replace the water that you are losing."

What they said.

However, only your doctor can tell you for sure if it is diabetes, but the symptoms you described are major indicators for it.  A very simple blood test taken by your health care professional will either confirm it, or rule it out.

Pure, My dr did say my blood sugars indicated pre diabeties last time I had them checked, and I have been managing them by not eating so much junk and the levels  started to go down

Merc the extra drinking doesn't result in needing to pee more often, that I noticed. Oh and I'm not like this all the time or regularly it just seems to come on out of the blue sometimes, and it could be weeks and months inbetween times of wooly  dry toung feelings.

Could also be the amount of salt you have eaten a day or two before the wooly tongue feeling. Salt will make you extra thirsty and make your tongue feel like it is sandpapery and woooly.

Try adding a bit of lemon or something. Helps me. Not enough to like, gag, but just a squeeze or so. It makes it more hydrating.

good oral hygiene is a must. Lightly brush your tongue when you brush you teeth

Medications of certain sorts can also give you dry mouth but the whole diabetes thing is a serious consideration.

I do that already when I brush:)

Toothpaste will also make my mouth feel dried out too, but I expect that lol.

Will have to try that,

MrDennynSlave I don't recall eating a bunch of salty things but I don't have the greatest memory or recall of just what I ate sometimes, so that's a consideration too.

This is most likely not the case for you, but when I ate a full bag of Salt and Vinegar chips, I can be thirsty for days afterwards.

More then likely it was one of the other causes stated above.  :)

Only your licensed medical professional can give you a diagnosis, but dry mouth is a common symptom and side effect. The majority of individuals who exhibit dry mouth with the lack of other correlating symptoms are suffering from one of a small handful of conditions:

(A) Medication side effects: Look into the most commonly reported side effects of any medications you take. While your medication label may say that it can cause this side effect, this may only be done to prevent liability in case of a suit. The most accessible person with the ability to accurately and reliably tell you whether or not this is a commonly reported, benign side effect is a licensed pharmacist who will be more than happy to have a consultation with you at no cost about the medication in question.

(B) Dehydration: Even if you are consuming large amounts of water in one sitting, if you are not consuming proper amounts of water in your diet regularly your body could be responding to a state of chronic dehydration where it is attempting to restore homeostasis, or the "normal" functioning state of the body. Chronic dehydration can be caused by the diet, dysfunction, or an illness. Attempt to correct the dehydration by consuming the proper amount of water in your diet over the course of the day consistently over a course of one or two weeks, and observe if it rectifies the situation. If not, you may wish to speak with your doctor.

(C) A disease or dysfunction of the body: Many individuals who suffer from chronic diseases or disorders of the body may go extended periods without diagnosis, and only learn of their condition when they are admitted to a hospital in a state of crisis. It is important to see a licensed medical doctor for regular check-ups to ensure that your body is in the healthiest state it can be. Ensure that during your check-ups that the doctor runs a full range of preventative testing. This includes: (Both Genders) Liver and kidney function, metabolic panels, complete blood counts, prothrombin and partial prothrombin times, cardiac enzymes, and a chest x-ray. (Males) It is important that you check yourself after a warm shower for lumps in the testes, especially as your reach 30 and above. Testicular cancer is a silent and deadly killer. As you get older, ensure you pay special attention to the heart, and always get your prostate exams on time. (Females) Ensure you have your breasts checked for lumps by the physician, and as you get older ask about bone density checks for osteoporosis, which occurs significantly more often in women around the age of 40.

Regular checkups will ensure that you live a long and healthy life.

Apologies if this post was too long or deviated from the essentials, as a medical professional I am adamant about the advantages of preventative medicine. The dry mouth is more than likely nothing to worry about if there are no other symptoms present, but if it is a genuine concern I highly recommend seeing a licensed physician.

it might be

salt is an abrasive. If i eat ranch rice cakes (which i love and really hog out on) i pay for it by having a very sore tongue for a day or two. One or two are fine but the more you eat, the more damage is done to the mouth.

Oh! Hey! Smoke any pot? That causes CRAZY Dry mouth, too! Might also be a medication... On any? Hrm... Dry mouth... Dry mouth is a common side effect of many prescription and nonprescription drugs, including drugs used to treat depression, anxiety, pain, allergies and colds (antihistamines and decongestants), obesity, acne, epilepsy, hypertension (diuretics), diarrhea, nausea, psychotic disorders, urinary incontinence, asthma (certain bronchodilators), and Parkinson's disease. Dry mouth is also a side effect of muscle relaxants and sedatives.

Yeah... See! Lotsa medications cause it....

Lotsa causes.

Of course, ya are probably just dehydrated. Drink a steady amount of water over a few days and it should go away. Just keep up with a water routine! Drink a glass or two before anything in the morning, drink some at lunch and some at night, unless you have problems wetting the bed. Then, drink it more mid-afternoon and pee before bed and you'll be fine.

I know coffee makes me get dehydrated, too! Silly diuretics!

Sometimes you just can't help pigging out on junk, I remember one time I had a huge helping of honey bbq wings , and I spent the next 3 days dying of thirst lol.

And I so understand Holly's sore toung beause I LOVE sun flower seeds, in shell and I suck the shell completly free of all salt and after a few handfulls my lip and my toung huurt.

Nope, not a pot smoker, or any other drug user:) I'm not on any other medications either despite the fact Daddy thinks I need a mood stabilizer cause he thinks I am moody and switch rapidly from one mood to another lol.

Bipolar! Oh noez! Meh, who cares? If I listened to every doctor that tried to psycho-analyze me, I'd be popping pills non-stop all day long! ADHD, Bipolar, Paranoid Schizophrenia, Delusions, Hallucinations at times and the occasional occtopus nibbling at my toes under my desk.

We don't need pills. We need more coffee.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: How come sometimes even after drinking plenty H20 your toung still feels like its coated in sand? (9/15/2009 12:35:45 PM)

Oh hell yes! Being hyper means happiness. Happiness promotes healthiness! Healthiness promotes OCTOPUSES!!!! If you were in my head, that would make sense.

I rarely eat at fast food places anymore but "Taco Bell" food used to make me soooo thirsty hours later after I ate there...I used to love their "Mexican Pizza" I think it was called.... Maybe you ate at a place like that.
