The results of this could have been similar to 9/11. The plan was to explode seven airliners flying from the UK to the US and Canada simultaneously. The worrying thing is most of those taking part were born in the UK, or moved here at an early age.

I had to fly to the US to see some friends a few weeks after these guys were arrested. The queues at Gatwick were horrendous and most people were a bit worried. No one moaned at the delays though and the airline staff were superb.

Good result on sentencing but I have this feeling they'll probably appeal it down when the publicity goes away.

You are right that they may appeal, I dont think they will get a result though. This was planned mass murder on an almost unimaginable scale ( prior to 9/11 )

Why would they need to appeal? They'll probably just get sent straight home to Libya.

I've always liked justice where the potential consequences of a crime are considered as just as significant as actual consequences. e.g. if you plant a bomb at a train station and it fails to go off that should be equal to that bomb going off and killing/maiming this many (based on testing and the amount of people traffic at that time of day in that location). Unfortunately we have this tendency to base our judgement on the consequences rather than the intent.

i.e. someone that falls asleep at the wheel and kills five people is treated differently to someone that just falls asleep at the wheel and hits a tree injuring only himself.

I’m glad to see we are moving away from this.

I wondered if someone would raise that issue rather than be glad the carnage was prevented.

Not the best example of British justice anyway: a patchy case for the prosecution with a judgement not made by twelve or fifteen but by three.

Why on earth would you presume one must necessarily exclude the other?

And why would it not get brought up? You have to admit, it's difficult to avoid the irony here.

Didn't you British sorts get this stuff, once upon a time?  Hanging, beheading, drawing and quartering?  Wasn't there a time when the ravens hung around the Tower without needing to clip their wings?

There is no irony this side of the pond, our laws on prisoner release on compasionate grounds apply to all. If these guys, or any other criminal, get released due to having three months to live, I can cope with that. That doesnt mean I agree with it, as I said on the Lockerbie thread.

There is this sculpture at London bridge a single spike protruding up into the air. This apparently represents the time traitors heads used to be displayed on spikes on the original bridge. You see in those days justice was only ever about retribution. Personally I'm not sure harking back to those days is a good thing or a sign of progress.
