There are also some tattoo markers that I picked up through Dick Blick or one of the other art supply centers. They don't tend to last very long, but they're non-toxic, and have some nice color options (instead of just black or surgical purple). As far as the Sharpie thing, my daughter (a tattoo artist) started out doing Sharpie designs on herself and others -- I figured that, as long as you don't bathe in the stuff and don't write over open wounds, etc., it's not any worse for you than tattoo ink (which I actually have a -lot- of).
