There is another side to this position that I would represent offsets the number of caucasian bigots; that is consideration of the black bigots. I discount the race card because there as just as many on both sides who see, and vote, race first.

95% of black voters went to the ballot for Obama and only 4% for McCain

What really gets tiresome on these boards is when the same claims keep popping up no matter how many times they have been proven wrong.

Depending on which source you want to believe, Obama received between 91% and 95% of the black vote.

Both Kerry and Gore received in excess of 90%.

FactCheck.org: When did blacks start voting Democratic?

.........President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 (outlawing segregation in public places) and his eventual Republican opponent, Sen. Barry Goldwater, opposed it. Johnson got 94 percent of the black vote that year, still a record for any presidential election.

The following year Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act. No Republican presidential candidate has gotten more than 15 percent of the black vote since.

So I would hardly call this an example of black bigotry.

Don't hope for too much, Rule. Just the way the right wing will claim anyone who they vote into office and then screws up royally isn't a real conservative, they'll just start claiming that Gore and Kerry are really black.

I don't oppose those programs because I am a racist.  I oppose them because too often they have been used as a way for people from all races to avoid lifting themselves up.  Why work if someone else will pay you for doing nothing?  Why worry about birth control when you can go to the clinic and get a free or nearly-free abortion?  And on and on.

Yes, because welfare benefits are so generous that people quit working just to take advantage of them.

I claimed that Gore was actually a wooden mannequin but I don't think he was a black one. Oh wait, I'm not a right wing asshole, just an asshole.

"I can't trust Obama...  He's an Arab?"   No offense meant to Arabs of course.
I'm desperately trying not to see it like you my friend; but this man's considered "otherness" by some folks, has them enraged and going insane, over the fact that he [and how dare he] holds the most prestigious office in the world.   A great percentage of people still believe he's not American, and therefore has no right to be in the white house.

I don't even consider Obama particularly liberal.   Between his insisting on cooperation with the people trying to delegitimatize him, and those democrats bought and paid for by pacts, little if anything is going to be accomplished during this administration.   As a matter of fact, I disagree with many of his positions, especially, not insisting on single payer healthcare.    I think he should be a lot more the man he is being accused of being, a Democratic ideologue.    Alas, he is trying to reason with insanity, and will unfortunately get very little done; for this reason, the Democrats will, with good reason, lose the next 1-2 elections for being inept leaders.

Do I need to link you to the dictionary?    If you're racist, that's your business, and no one is here looking for confessions by the way.    On the other hand, I personally prefer people who wear white sheets, and name themeselves honestly.     M

P.S.  Now back to reading the rest of the replies.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts/discussion.

So, not everyone who disagrees with Obama is tarred with the racist label then.

How do you sort out which ones get tarred and which ones don't?

As much as it may surprise you, Sanity, many of us do from time to time disagree with Obama. The only reason some in the right seem to think all of his supporters are mindless, worshiping zombies is that they consider anything less than calling him a mixture of the antichrist, the grinch who stole christmas and the worst idea America has had since the leisure suit is total adoration.

By their rants.  If they're a birther...looking to distract and take away his citizenship...debunking him as president cuz his father was a kenyan, I'd say racist.

If they're ranting "death-panel"...just an ignorant fool, easily led by the ones who invented the death panel rant.

(see how easy that was?)

So the race card is just another tool to be casually used in any given debate, the charge of racism doesn't really mean anything.

If the left doesn't like what someone says about Obama, they bash them with it. No set parameters really, Carter can disagree with Obama but that's not racism. Joe Wilson disagrees with Obama, and that is racism.

I understand perfectly now, thanks.

Carter probably hates / hated other races in his heart... else why is he trying to suggest that all whites are racists. See, he's got a skewed view, by his reasoning the only reason anyone could disagree with Obama is because of race differences.

Joe Wilson's disagreement was more a lack of tact than racism.

I think its time that people realize that he's not a black president nor a white president. He's THE president. The racism card is thrown out to attempt to discredit others whenever it seems necessary or convenient. Are there racists out there? Damned right there are. Are most of the people who didn't vote for Obama racist? No. Some of his supporters wish it were that easy.

In politics... like so many wish to point out Carter's past attempts at Prsident... somethings are rarely forgotten, often recorded, and typically tucked away for days like Wilson recently had.

My time is short.. work calls... but.. i would love to see your thoughts on Carter's racism.. and when i get back.. ill give you mine on Wilson's.

I find it interesting to note that nobody has yet mentioned that Obama has already let it be known through his press secretary that he does NOT agree with Carter's assessment. He said very clearly that he believes that those who oppose him do so because of differences in policy, not differences in race.

Boy, that's playing the "race card" all right.

Let it be known though that while at the time he was "soundly disagreeing" with Carter, his administration also stated that it would not stop other democrats from calling "racism".  What a way to have your cake AND eat it too..."I won't say this but if others in my party want to, well who am I to try and stop them?"

True...his problem is just that of being anti-Semitic as he has shown repeatedly since he left office.  But hey, at least he's not racist.

The race card (almost always) is a card that is played, or a card that is claiming to be played in a given debate when different races are involved.  That is just the nature of our country, I suppose.  But when you "listen" to the reasons of the disagreements, you can pretty much come to your own conclusions as to what is what.  You may not want to agree with it, but none-the-less, its there.

When you put words in Jimmy Carters mouth, saying he must really be a racist because of the remarks he made about racism....well, that means we can say anything about you, regardless of what you said because we think its otherwise.

I'm not sure you really do understand.  Then again, I'm not sure you want to.  It is not my job to explain racism to you and how people react to it.  I will say this though.  A racist will jump on anything said to prove they're right and its so.  So, death panels, liars, birthers, whatever will be pounced on by a racist (in my opinion), because it adds fuel to the fire, and to their cause.  It makes the lines a bit fuzzier to tell who is complaining because they believe something else, or they've been misled to believe it, or they are, truly, a racist.

Mr Carter assumes that "the overwhelming majority" of opposition of Obama is racially driven. We know he's thinking like a racist. He sees that as the root cause of the problem. Favoring or taking sides on any issue simply because of the race of the front-man IS racist, even if it isn't your race doing the fronting.

You don't know that regarding the opposition, they could only disagree with the plan and the outcome and not be considering race. There is doubt in their case. There is no doubt concerning Carter.
quote:

A racist will jump on anything said to prove they're right and its so.
I'd argue that a racist is also the first to bring it up since whenever he sees people of different races disagreeing his first thought is that the disagreement is racially motivated.

Well, then....it looks like its a fruitless, endless debate then.  I am going to guess we will all have our opinions on racism.  How we come to those conclusions are just that...our conclusions.  Me personally, I think Jimmy Carter was giving an honest remark about something he is troubled over, and that is racism.  I am not sure how calling it like you see it makes you a part of the problem you are seeing.  Call him a racist and me a racist, too.  I doubt it changes anything, because as repeatedly demonstrated on these forums....people will see things differently.

The only givens in this entire debate are 1) that a large section of folks dangling off the left end of the spectrum will endlessly dissect every word uttered about democrats or Obama in search of the moment they can go berserk because they have indeed, found a racist opinion and 2) that no debate will have any real merit or impact because of 1).

And in the end, the same folks will preach tolerance and freedom. It just boggles my fucking mind that they don't see the inherent racism in those actions.

If that statement wasn't clear enough, then yes, I consider a good section of the left racist.

I think the only two givens in this debate are:
1) There is more racism in this country and against Obama than many on the right claim there to be.
2) There is less racisim in this country and against Obama than many on the left claim there to be.

Oh, one other given:

It's easier to blame the other side entirely than work towards rational solutions.
