ORIGINAL: popeye1250 First of all why should U.S. Taxpayers pay for Eastern Europe's defense? Secondly, why on earth would Iran want to ever attack Eastern Europe? To steal their ox carts? "Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead!" Obama needs to make a lot more spending cuts like this. First thing, universal healthcare is quite widespread throughout Eastern Europe and it's affordable, effective and doesn't bankrupt people, unlike in certain countries I could mention. In fact in most places they have a standard of living comparable to that in Western Europe. Eastern European defense isn't paid for by U.S. Taxpayers or really has anything to do with U.S. Taxpayers. U.S. Taxpayers pay towards an organization called NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which has been around quite a while, as do Taxpayers of other member states, including the UK and Poland. You can find out what NATO is here. Eastern Europe is defended to a large extent by NATO, but using their own forces. For example Poland (who managed to stump up enough money to pay for some F-16 fighter planes from the Americans) which is defended by Polish armed forces who since their accession to NATO have been trained by mainly the British and Dutch armed forces at bases such as Draworsk Pomorski in north west Poland. Incidentally I read somewhere that out of every $4 spent in the world one dollar goes to the United States. But anyway... Instrumental in the Iraq invasion and Coalition forces Operation Iraqi Freedom were GROM and a specialist chemical warfare unit which were both part of the Polish armed forces. Indeed in 1991 prior to Operation Desert Storm it was GROM who managed to rescue a number of CIA agents, protected US ambassador's W. G. Walker's missions in Kosovo and Macedonia, and who are currently working to eliminate (not capture) terrorists in Afghanistan. The war dead in Iraq includes 13 from Bulgaria, 1 from the Czech Republic, 2 from Estonia, 1 from Kazachstan, 3 from Latvia, 23 from Poland, 3 from Romania, 4 from Slovenia, and 18 from the Ukraine. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
