Yeah, that would be wonderful, but a couple of pesky problems inserted themselves into the wonderfully wholesome ideal of sport a few decades ago: politics, and money.

Sports can be resumed in a simple equation:

hallucinated audiences - brains + tons of dough to spend on crappy snacks and beer and gigantic television screens = big bizness.

Who can figure out these Native Americans? All the settlers did was come to their country, use every method of destruction available to them, including biological warfare to kill them, broke just about every peace agreement they entered into with them, segregate them into what were essentially concentration camps and pretty much make them into the poorest, shortest lived racial group in the country. Why the hell should they be so over sensitive? After all, we are giving them tax free cigarettes and booze.

Just goes to show you. Some people have no sense of gratitude.

THE INDIAN WARS

Indeed, a recent SI poll suggests that although Native American activists are virtually united in opposition to the use of Indian nicknames and mascots, the Native American population sees the issue far differently.

Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81% of Native American respondents said no. As for pro sports, 83% of Native American respondents said teams should not stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters and symbols.

Opinion is far more divided on reservations, yet a majority (67%) there said the usage by pro teams should not cease, while 32% said it should.

"[Sport] is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce [sport], which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. [Sport] is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. "

"Sport is the religion of the people." Thanks, Karl [8D] .

Or............... maybe because it's fun and a great excuse to drink beer?

And as I mentioned earlier...some towns and high schools are fight back for just that reason. Warriors, Braves, Chiefs... they are not exclusive to American Indians. They are easily adapted to other mascots and so decades of identifying with one culture, and honoring it, ie American Indains, gets changed and the school systems go to the generic of that name or with some other culture.

But I still will pop a cork when The Fore.. uhhh..Redskins lose their name, logo and identity

A poem:

One bad joke about foreskins, duly heard
Two bad jokes about foreskins, are better not heard.
