Pittsburgh - when I was thru it- is not a bad city.  I would live there sooner then Philly - Harrisburg before either.  The northern tier is the nicest part of the state.  (my taste)  While NE PA is nice- pretty - too many from NY/NJ moved in - throwing that region off balance.   The new comers set out to build the region just like the old neighborhood- the trouble is all that has to get paid for- schools- roads- infrastructure- a fair number of locals priced out of their hometowns.

York is not a bad town.  It has a reputation- but I dont find it to be the bad hick place they claim.

In general ALL of PA has its young workers leave for better states- in fact- only Florida has more retirees.

I do think there are going to be alot of protests...    maybe I am wrong- but Pitt never forgot the steel mill days.

I grew up in Pittsburgh. Born and raised. I was one of that younger generation who left and never came back. I moved out about 30 years ago. I enjoyed living there and missed it terribly for several years after having moved but there were better opportunities elsewhere.

One thing puzzles me about the G-20 summit being in Pittsburgh. I never fully realized this until I had lived somewhere else for a while but Pittsburgh has to be the hardest city in the country to get from point A to point B in. Rivers, bridges, tunnels... there's no such thing as "as the crow flies" as far as navigating the city goes. Even downtown is built on this odd triangular grid.

I'm much like the folks cited in the story who remember the good old days a little too fondly. I still reference the geography of Pittsburgh based on building and landmarks that no longer exist. The city skyline has changed significantly in the past 30 years but much of the rest of the city and outlying areas is in a bit of a time warp.

A getogether like this will create traffic headaches even in cities that aren't already traffic challenged but I'm glad I don't have a late September trip home planned. I know my vehicle's suspension thanks me for having moved away. I can remember the old man always put "recap" tires on the family vehicles. Just couldn't justify the price of new tires considering the local terrain. To this day after a road trip back there to visit  the first place I head to when I get home is the alignment shop. The section of Route 28 between the Heinz plant and 40th St Bridge still scares the hell out of me to this day.

I hear a lot of people wipe out on 28, but I personally never found it scary.

I think it's mostly that people in Pittsburgh suck at 2-lane roads and like to weave wildly between the two lanes based on whichever one has appeared faster in the last 5 seconds.

Well I mean... I've been to other areas and in the 2 lane roads everyone drives on the right and passes on the left.  It's very orderly and not at all how people drive on 28 or in Pittsburgh in general..

i knew what you meant...i was teasing. 28 is too small to handle the amount of traffic so both lanes are in use at all times....and really, there is nothing that can be done about it.

Sure there is.  Who's ready for a lane widening project!!!  We'll just have to close it down for a year and a half and then it'll be better than ever.

i thought there was a traffic study a while ago and widening the area around RIDC Park was ok, but in other areas it was not possible.

PA has a breathtaking road engineer department.

We put roads where no road has ever been- or should be.   lol
