GRACE She gets home at dawn from another sleepless night flirting with strangers under the streetcorner light. Innocence sacrificed to everyman's need, a bright silver needle, and a habit to feed Out on the streets, it's an age-old tale, just turned seventeen and her love's for sale. Oh don't you know? Oh can't you see? But for the grace of God she's you and me. At the age of fourty-nine he found himself unemployed, his dreams tumbled down, his self-worth destroyed. He feels to old and tired to start a new life. How will he feed the kids? How will he tell the wife? He stands outside in the driving hail asking himself again "Where did I fail?" Oh don't you know? Oh can't you see? But for the grace of God he's you and me. She bravely waved goodbye and held back her tears. But each night in her bed she's alone with her fears. He went overseas to defend the flag, came home yesterday in a vinyl bag Her pretty young face is drawn and pale, hidden away behind a widow's veil. Oh don't you know? Oh can't you see? But for the grace of God she's you and me. R. P. G.
