I never have side affects to medication, but since being on the Depo shot for birth control, my body has been going completely insane. No sex drive, constant bleeding, depression, mood swings, bloating, you name it I'm experiencing it.

Everything I read about the side affects say it can be an irreversible change. Now I don't know about you, but that's devistating news for me. I LOVE sex. It's depressing that I am uninterested. I have sex because I feel like I should, rarely because I actually want to.

My libido seems to be directly connected to my desire for BDSM. I have played since experiencing these side affects, but the results were a big let down. While he enjoyed it, and I enjoyed it, it was hard for me to stay motivated during it, hard for me to relate and get into it, and hard for me to accept that I couldn't finish off play time the way I love - with sex or an orgasm.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? What have you done to get through it? Has it ever gotten better?

I have wondered if it's just that I'm bored with my sexual relationship to the guy, but I'm not sexually interested in anyone else either, so I'm pretty sure that is not it.

Get off Depo. Get off it now. There are other forms of birth control. I used to volunteer in a women's health clinic and I cannot even tell you how many horrible things I saw DepoProvera do to women's bodies. It makes me really sad that nobody has made it illegal.

Also, birth control is not medication. You are actually injecting yourself with hormones - in Depo's case it is a synthetic version of what your body produces naturally. So that's why you're reacting differently than you would to, say, aspirin. You're actually changing your body's hormonal balance.

Forgive my ignorance but what is libido. Do you mean like sex drive?

As a former Depo user....ditto the advice already given. That stuff made me go nuts.

Once you get the injection, there's really nothing you can do besides wait for your body to get rid of it. From what I've read, that can take anywhere from 6 months to a year.

I am NOT planning on using it again and I WILL be using 'natural birth control' methods along with condoms and such. No more pills for me!

Don't use Depo again.  Typically, the effects recede as the chemicals wear their way out of your system.
I've tried taking birth control pills twice in my life (Once at about 21, next about a decade later) with terrible results: killed my libido, made me behave as if I was essentially bipolar (Omg, the mood-swings!), crushing chest pains, throwing up, etc., etc., etc.  Effects went away after baaaaaad chemicals went away.
Best wishes and talk with your care provider about alternatives that do not involve the hormones that're in the Depo or perhaps no hormones at all.

there are some of us  that simply cannot handle most types of birth control.

Yikes.

I have had bad side effects from various types of birth control.  I figure they're better than the bad side effect of LACK of birth control, which is unplanned pregnancy, so I try to cope with it.  So far as lack of libido goes--I have suffered from fluctuations in my level of desire throughout my life, and I still do.  It's generally caused by illness, emotional stress, or the drain of the other demands of my life, which can easily eat up the wattage that I might otherwise direct into my sexuality.

The best way to cope with it is just...to be kind and forgiving to yourself and your partner/s.  Be extremely straightforward and honest, talk about what has happened and how you're going to both wait and work to fix it (I've heard good things about Naturopathic Cleansing in cases like this--a lot of herbal remedies help the human body to regulate its hormones.)  Until the situation improves, strange as it sounds, I've often found that "disappointing" sex is better for you and your lovers than avoiding sex altogether.

There are a lot of emotional bonding and affirmation elements that both parties need; the feelings of abandonment/rejection/loss that a partner can experience while you're waiting for your groove to come back can be cumulative and pretty damaging.  If you can manage not to resent him/her because you're sick and he/she is well, it might be best to keep up a play-date once in a while.  If nothing else, you can journal after each session to see how you felt and get a sense of your own responses, to see if you're making any real progress back toward normalcy.

I am stoked to the gills on antidepressants, so I have no clue if my birth control affects my libido or not....  but I am with everyone else on NO to depo.  I am on Yaz, which is about the best pill I have ever been on.

I guess this is where I feel lucky that I am almost always able to play, since sex isn't involved...  so perhaps this is a chance to broaden your horizons and try some things that are outside your normal interests, and see if new things are amusing to you.  This is not the time to cut yourself off from your companion or playmate, this is the time to get closer!  We all have health issues throughout our lives, this is just a (deeply aggravating) challenge for you to work around.

Some people just can't handle synthetic hormones...remember this when years from now a doctor tries to give you hormone replacement therapy for menopause.

Have you looked into an IUD? Seems like it would be a better option than baby or bi-polar? Have only heard of 1 person that had it grow into where it shouldn't and she had to have it removed and another put in.

~~I also have a friend who got preggers TWICE with an IUD, so maybe an IUD with a hormone, like Mirena?

I'm a wuss, and I've heard how uncomfortable it can be to have it inserted and taken out if you haven't given birth before. I was thinking about doing the Nuvaring to help my body get back on track, but there is an AWESOME herbal shoppe in my town that have classes for all kinds of stuff. I'm going to call them and ask if they can help with this situation.

Well I am not a doctor but if you are bleeding from this medication, you need to try something else. If you are depressed sex is something you will not desire. The less the sex you have, the less you may desire it If you are having sex with someone who you are not really into also can decrease the desire. I question the drug;s ability of the drug, to kill your desire permanently, even if after you stop taking it. It is not simply not logical, because either the drug leaves your system in one way or another, or it loses it's potentacy after time. I can's see the FDA allowing such a drug on the market

If you're going the non-medication route, the Ovacue ovulation monitor, in addition to perhaps other methods, is something that I would recommend.  It's expensive but at the time I purchased mine, it was the best on the market.
As for Nuvaring, I tried that a couple of years ago after the second try on the pills.  It didn't mess me up as bad as the pills but it gave me a permanent pain in one of my feet (No, it wasn't a blood clot: I saw my GP for that and she pissed me off massively by sugesting abstainence when I was in a relationship with 2 men: last visit with her as my GP).
My gyn, whose pragmatism and attunement to me I respect and appreciate, finally said to me: "Look, you know as much about birth control options as do I.  You shouldn't take hormones, it screws you up too much.  An IUD would likely make you bleed very heavily during periods for at least a year.  Look, you did pretty well with the fertility monitoring, I suggest you go back to doing that."

Same here!   Never could take the pill.  They made me crazy.  Can't deal with anything with a spermicide in it either.  Not on the condoms, not the sponge, the ring, none of that.  It always  causes rashes in my delicate parts.  The only thing I can handle is my IUD or regular lubricated condoms.

Just because something is 'legal' and medically accepted, doesn't mean that it's right for you.

I'm so sorry to hear that it's going to take that long for that nasty Depo stuff to leave your system.

I tried the Nuvaring for a few months, and didn't have anything bad happen while I was on it, but this has completely scared me straight. I refuse to fuck with my body's hormone levels ever again!

And Acer49 - It's been proven that it can completely alter your bodies natural balance and cause irreversible changes. I've read from some women who are still having spotting and irregular cycles 5+ years after being off the shot and never taking any more birth control whereas before they were always regular and never had any problems. I've also read from women that they had children before, but after getting off the shot, they were unable to conceive without medical help. Now I'm sure these cases aren't 'standard' but the fact that they exist is enough to scare me.

Yaz is such an AWESOME  bcp. It even helped me with my horrendous pms mood swings. So much that even after not taking yaz for a year, my pms still isnt as bad as it was before yaz.

the depo shot can affect each one differently, let your provider know and ask what can be taken to help with the unwanted side effects. my adhd meds have a similar effect but not as bad.
