http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-3557&tab=committees

To provide an emergency cost-of-living increase for Social Security benefits for 2010   H.R. 3557

...a few of you might be interested to learn that 2010 has no COLA- and same is projected for 2011.  This bill would add in a COLA for 2010.   Possibly 3%.

It is last minute - so any ones guess what they will do.

I'll wait to see how this pans out. Its only a matter of time before SS runs over its budget and pays out more than it takes in. (2017?) So a big increase or emergency spending would be in for quite the battle I bet.

PaHunk, of course they'll pass it! The Elderly and Veterans have the highest voting turnout of any demographic groups!
Up North we'd leave the American Legion hall en mass to go to the polls to vote as one unit.
The mid-term elections are next fall, can you imagine what the seniors and vets would be saying if *their* congressman/senator *didn't* vote for a COLA?
Man, it'd be real ugly!
Congressmen and senators *do not* want to go against those two groups!

And besides facing the seniors themselves, they'd Also have to contend with the Families of a lot of those seniors - the ones whom those seniors rely on to pick up the slack in case a COLA doesn't cover the TRUE increase in cost of living!  And let's not forget those who are Nearing retirement but aren't quite there yet, who know that any Lack in COLAs Now, means they don't get what they've put in - if there's anything left in a bancrupt, defunct, poorly run, mismanaged program to begin with.

...the Social Security has been looted.

If there is 10 years left- that would be a shock.   If the DOW goes to 4000- pensions would be cut- and 6 months later Social Security.  Under the law Soc Sec can not be reduced.   But consider how Argentina and other countries pan out when the currency goes bad.

The young people should not count on Soc Sec..

I bet they attach a bunch of junk to that bill.

Did you know government pay increases have been better the private industry.

But you know- since 2 trillion is "mission"  military, endless wars- and now the massive staggering bail outs-  in way throw the dog a bone.

Things are a mess - no doubt.

I know a good many seniors who pay some of the way of a loved one. So yeah.   The pundits that say deflation- yes- your house is deflated in "value",   but the cost of running the household has not deflated.    Yes gas came down in price-  but figure 1-1-10  my electric bill goes up  42%.   So that cost for "me" will not be deflated.

...if we have deflation- then the price of driving the toll road needs to come down.

Hunky, don't even get me started on I 80. Those toll booths were supposed to be a long time ago. From what I heard a company in Germany bought it though, so the booths stay.

In these cases I'd like to know just who they bought it from ! Like Micheal Jackson owned the rights to a state anthem. Who the hell did he pay for that ? Damn, I should be out selling the Brooklyn Bridge right now.
