I guess I'm new enough that these posts and their "do not put your hand on the hot stove" advice still amuse me. I also still get a kick out of the guys on craigslist who include "if you are a bot, do not respond to this ad!" Like they don't understand what a bot is.

worthlesstrash -> RE: General Notice of Advice (9/22/2009 9:28:20 AM)

Yeah, nice butt..but I like them a bit rounder myself..on guys and gals.[sm=moon.gif]

All members please note that there are not only many fakers and liars on here but also Scammers and well notified Nigerian and other such Fraudsters.
Collarme does not use any filtering to screen these people out. It would take too much time and energy and therefore it is up to each individual to take responsibility for themselves and keep on their toes and expose these Fraudsters when they crop up as they present the greatest threats.
May i propose then that when someone on here encounters these Fraudsters that they make their encounters known through a special topic entitled 'Suspected' 'Fraudsters'.You will only have to say that you believe that they are of course but you should furnish proof if possible in order for people to become wary of them. No direct action is necessary. These 'mentions' will only be used as markers and incidents so that as people encounter these people their particular accounts and profiles will become better known. As each member 'encounters' a 'Suspect' they can simply make it known. If however you feel that you are being unjustly accused by a malicious person you can counter this accusation on the same place and if there has been no further accusation from any other member over a period of time the accusation could be removed or even removed automatically after an extended period of time like a year. Don't forget that people can make mistakes too and also people are sometimes malicious.
To the layman they are not easy to spot and you must be certain of your facts before making an accusation of course but eventually you will know who they are when they ask for money. This does however cast an aspersion against certain people who may 'ask' legitimately.
Most of these people are people who try to trap you with sudden romantic affectations, declarations of love and involvements of a business nature as they know that people who feel they are loved and friendly present better targets.
Real friendships can develop of course and indeed real romances .The onus for these involvement is entirely down to you not Collarme.
Very often they will have photos that they have copied from other sites as well as copied profiles so please take note that they may sound legitimate and in some cases may be legitimate copied profiles..Never give your password away and inform Collarme if you have done so in a moment of weakness.
There is no easy way of telling who these people are but some of their techniques are well documented and well notified.
Most will be overseas people. especially Nigeria and other African Countries.Generally the further afield you go the greater the danger may be.
As a rule of thumb, if it is a problem part of the world, its a problem country, with problem people. Not all may be false but it is with these countries that you must take the greatest care.Remember too that people often put your country down as theirs and if you suspect that such and such a town or such and such a state is not real you had best avoid it. In short ,all information may be unreal or false.
Never give your real name unless you have met and know the person very ,very well and know for certain that you can trust them.Try not to give out any personal or family details that can be checked. Photos are not a certain way to ascertain that people are genuine.
It is not enough to block people because sometimes other people don't know why you are blocking them nor whether it was just or unjust. They may just be nuisances or people simply dislike them so that's no effective answer. What might be an answer is for the statistics of blockages on certain profiles to be made known but i cant vouch for the effectiveness of this either. People who don't know your country wont truly know your language very well either so look out for bad grammar and poor expressions with broken speech or misplaced words. Typography errors are common so you can ignore these.
The best defence is to be on your guard and keep asking questions of what they say.Detailed examination often exposes the lies.
I hope this helps.

Otrok ---

I too have come across fakes and scammers, so I understand your desire to publisher their names so that others can be warned. CM, however, does not allow this. They've posted a statement explaining why not. It may help you see their perspective.

Welcome to the message boards!

Cheers,

To the OP....it's fine and dandy to thoughtfully remind us all about people who deliberately misrepresent themselves here and elsewhere. Kindly do us a service and give the benefit of the doubt that we have a mind and fully realize that fact ourselves?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: General Notice of Advice (9/22/2009 1:58:11 PM)

~fr~

This was a TL:DR for me... let me know if something exciting happens, eh?  Like helpful hints on how we can set up college funds for the grandson with a really awesome internet scheme.

Hm.  But freeeeeeely offered TRIBUTE is supposed to be my deal, right?

mnottertail -> RE: General Notice of Advice (9/22/2009 2:02:27 PM)

I don't think that's a common kink (the freeeeeeeeeeeeely part) due to the number of threads on the subject.
