Mercnbeth -> BRUUUUCCCCEEE's BIRTHDAY! (9/23/2009 9:56:05 AM)

Damn - I hate it when people I identify as 'my era' get old. It means I'm old too - DAMN IT!

Today Bruce turns 60! FUCK!!!!

I'm reminded of the first profile I ever posted on a BDSM website. Under 'musts' for compatibility I listed "Must enjoy Bruce!". Parenthetically noting; "If you have to ask "Bruce Who?" don't bother responding.

First time I saw and was introduced to him and his music was while attending college in NJ. LONG before anyone knew the answer to "Bruce who?". My leprechaun Irish fraternity brother, who swears that he is the pitcher referenced in the 'Glory Day's' song, asked if I wanted to hear somebody play who he knew. He went to the same Freehold High School as Bruce and did pitch until he blew his arm out.

Keeeeeith, took me on a stoned road trip down 'Highway 9' from 'The Hall' in South Orange, to the original Stone Pony in Asbury Park where Bruce was hanging out, and usually played until dawn. There used to be bets about who was higher, Bruce or the audience. Bruce always won! I remember him doing one set standing on a table with his head poked through the hanging ceiling. WILD TIME! He was alway a great performer who still puts on a great concert.

That night I became a fan, and I've been one ever since.

Ironically, rumor has it that I live on the same street that Bruce lived during his Hollywood starlet 'steroid' era. Amazing he has his NJ redhead, I have my CA redhead.

Whats your favorite Bruce song? Mine is 'Thunder Road', although 'Glory Days', because of Keith, ranks a close second. 'Born to Run', the "unofficial youth 'Rock Anthem'" of NJ would be third.

On June 12, 1979, Born to Run was named New Jersey's Unofficial Youth Rock Anthem by the New Jersey State Legislature, something Springsteen always considered ironic because it was about leaving Jersey.

As a fan I thought it funny as well as representative that a song with the lyrics; "It's a death trap. It's a suicide rap. Gotta get out while were young!" became an official NJ anything. Goes to show, even back then legislators didn't read the details on the legislation they passed.

Clarence Clemens Saxaphone solo------------ *swoon*

Beneath the city;
two hearts beat;
soul engines runnin' thru a night so tender;
in a bedroom locked;
in whispers of soft refusal;
and then surrender-------------

You just can't get that kinda shit anywhere!

<thumping bass for three miles>
Off a pig for christ!!!!
<thumping bass for three miles, in a doppler effect>

That don't bring the wood.

Ron

Visiting a friend at the University of Pennsylvania in '72 he put on one of Bruce's records and i was just blown away..."who is this??!!" i asked, and it's been a love affair ever since. In answer to the poll, it's very difficult to choose just one song, kinda like picking a favorite rainbow, but Thunder Road is definately a top choice, it is incredibly wonderful poetry from start to finish.

"The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me"

Some guys they just give up livin';
they start dyin' little by little and piece by piece;

Some guys come home from work and wash up;
then go racing in the streets.

Bruce playing all day in my office, reminded me of a few more of my favorites.

  • Meeting Across The River ('cause it was the first song of Bruce I played)
  • Sandy (But it takes a few drinks, and a few years of hanging out summers on the Jersey shore to appreciate)
  • It's Hard To Be a Saint in the City
    • "Skin like leather and the diamond hard look of a Cobra.
      I could walk like Brando right into the sun
      Then dance just like a Casanova
      With my blackjack and jacket and hair slicked sweet
      Silver star studs on my duds like a Harley in heat
      So hard..
      ."

  • Backstreets (More great piano riffs, that I wish I could still play!)
  • Incident On 57th Street (Just so representative of NYC back then before 42nd Street was given to Disney)
  • For You

'For You' Always, for me, generated some nice mental S&M image with the lyrics:
And your strength is devastating in the face of all these odds
Remember how I kept you waiting when it was my turn to be the god?

You were not quite half so proud when I found you broken on the beach
Remember how I poured salt on your tongue and hung just out of reach....

But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way
like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way
We were both hitchhikers but you had your ear tuned to the roar
of some metal-tempered engine on an alien, distant shore
So you, left to find a better reason than the one we were living for
and it's not that nursery mouth I came back for
It's not the way you're stretched out on the floor
cause I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors
And who am I to ask you to lick my sores?
And you should know that's true...
I came for you, for you, I came for you..

Sometimes changing the 'for' to 'on' while singing it late in rundown bar NJ bar in a cover bands over the years just to see if anyone was paying attention.

And here I thought that this was going to be about Bruce Campbell.  [>:]  He turned 51 this year.
