Love fish, right? Cats, that is. Everybody knows they're crazy for fish.

But if cats hate water, and do everything they can to avoid going near it - how did they ever find out how much they like fish? Anyone else lie awake nights wondering about this?

GreedyTop -> RE: So, Cats.... (9/24/2009 12:28:00 AM)

someone with a domesticated cat who lived near water fed the cat fish.  In a species memory, the rest of the cats that followed also developed a taste for fish (except mine.. they prefer chicken, turkey or beef)

my cats like ham. The oldest one (18) likes to swipe the kids coveted green beans. [8|]

My best guess is that semi-domesticated canines and felines were fed table scraps and scavenged the kitchen scraps from areas where other animals or fish were caught, killed and prepared.

My cat is a Maine coon and he loves water, he splashes it all over the place. Fish isn't his favorite, chicken is and he will try every cute face he can muster to get it off my plate and into his jaws. Now the new kitten I rescued will eat anything you put before her, her favorite thing to eat is Good Recipe treats (any flavor) she will devour the entire bag if you leave it out.

Can't say I lie awake thinking about things like this [;)]

I have one cat that loves water.  Just a plain old American short-haired who like to catch drops from the faucet and take a shower with me (usually when I don't have time to properly dry her off). She likes tuna...straight from the can.  Why?  I think its because I introduced her to it, nothing more nothing less.

I have another old girl (17 yrs) who will only get near water to take a drink and she also likes tuna. She, however, throws it up afterwards because she has a "delicate constitution".  I no longer give her tuna.

My other cat will only get near water (except to drink) if I hold her very tight and give her a quick dunk. I always make sure to trim her nails prior to the "bathing ritual" for my own protection.  She eats tuna...actually, she eats ANYTHING!  She quite "fluffy" due to her love of food.  Her favorite is the extremely stinky/gooey/creamy raw milk cheeses I like to treat myself with sometimes.  She likes it without a cracker and if she starts developing a taste for the wine I drink along with it, then I'm in trouble.
I wish she would take a liking to the taste of mice...'tis the season again. Unfortunatly her tastes are a bit too refined for that.[;)]

Cats more or less domesticated themselves long ago. They pretty much moved in, said it looks nice here, and went off in search of snacks.

Cats were brought onto shipping vessels to deal with the rat problem, and I suspect they got a taste of some lovely fish guts as well.

It is only relatively recently that cats have been so thoroughly spoiled.

Uhhhhhh.......  have you forgotten  how Cats were treated in ANCIENT Egypt?  Spoiled rotten, protected by law, the only creatures other than Pharoh himself who were allowed to sit on the Throne, given free reign to wander wherever they happened to go, and given mummification and elaborate burial as though they were nobles?  (I just don't consider Ancient Egypt to be "relatively recent.")

As far as the OP ........

Cats are Carnivores, not omnivores.  They are also consumate Survivors.  They will eat whataever meat/protein there is to be found - whether it is given to them on a silver platter, or they have to go catch it for themselves.  While most varieties of domestic cats don't like swimming, there are no animals that I can think of - including and especially cats - who don't have to Drink.  In our homes, this means walking to a filled bowl or drinking from the toilet or sink.  In the wild - or even just for feral, previously domesticated animals - this means lakes, streams, and puddles.  Lakes & Streams means the opportunity to find fish on the shore, or very close to shore.

I imagine that cats have always been part scavengers much like their close relatives, and that their ancestors ate fish that were trapped in tide pools or that washed up on shore or that were caught and partially eaten by men, birds, and other animals.

Observe feral cats some time and you'll see that they are very opportunistic eaters.

So were some men, as well as certain women.

If cats lived in desert areas prior to being domesticated it seems that they would have found the best hunting areas and even the best shelter along rivers, lakes and oceans, as. well.

Cat's were common on ships due to the rat problem, that would mean they had to travel where ships went.  Ocean areas always have fish loving populations.  And then there are wild cats, tigers and leopards that love water.

Sanity -> RE: So, Cats.... (9/24/2009 7:18:26 AM)

Cats probably developed their taste for fish long before they were ever domesticated.

Rhi

Actually I did forget that. Cats were worshiped as gods. Many people think that Egypt is where cats were originally domesticated.  Egypt had huge grain stores, which led to rats, which led to cats.

As spoiled as my two boys are though, I refuse to worship them like gods. And yes, they do have the ASPCA on speed dial.
