Toppingfrmbottom -> after unplugging and replugging in printer won't workThis is a constant problem (9/24/2009 1:57:53 PM)

I have a Epson stylys PHOTO R320 It'll run fine, beautifully infact then you unplug it from the USB port because you need the USB port for something else, finish up plug it back in and now it wno't work. It's on, I know that it's on because the power light it on and it makes all the noises a printer turning on makes, but then when you go to print it says check all the cables make sure they're connected properly, and the only solution to make it stop is to delete the program go to the web page and download the driver and install it again, this is the ONLY thing that makes the check cables notice go away, and if you ever unplug it again it's the same thing all over again.

Has any one else experinced something like this, do you know why  unplugging it from the usb port makes it suddenly stop working, if you did how'd you fix it.

I've never had an issue like that, but it's a driver problem. You unplug the device, your PC thinks you no longer use it and drops the driver, and then when you plug it back in, it doesn't work.

They make inexpensive USB slicers, I'd invest in one. This will allow you to plug serveral USB devices in where your PC has only one slot. A caveat: any device you use through the splicer will probably work more slowly. This could be an issue if you are, for instance, backing up your external hard drive.

go look for a usb port extender hub amazon got them in 4 shot for about 20 bucks for a cheapie.
the reason that you have to reinstall the driver is that what ever overlays it is kicking out the old one to do its thingie.

Ron

(only good and permanent solution)

Thank you. I thought I'd surprise Daddy by having our reservation links and stuff printed instead of him doing it when he got homeand then low and behold the printer won't work [>:]\

After payday I'll get one of those splicers, the webcam has the same problem as the printer, and it'd be super nice not to have to stop and re install everything, everytime I want to use the USB port.

Your welcome. Ron, however, has the name right: usb port hub extender.

I'm not really a techy person, I just know "stuff."

I really doubt this is a driver issue. What OS and version are you using?

micro$oft web driver is kicking that other driver out, Ken. I will bet a nut on it. Thats why they call it micro$oft.

I have had constant problems with this since I got my newly released vista and a printer that said it went with it. Yeah... okay. I have redone driver's and still it says the same thing. It is there, lights on.. but nobody home. I have gone to hp... gone to the printer maker site... advice sites... done everything I was told to do. Still my vista and printer hate one another and I can't print anything. I got it to print twice. I have given up and it's a problem to me, but I can't figure it out and one day may plan a baseball bat treatment and burial.

i hit it with a hammer.

It did not fix the printer, but *I* sure felt better.[:)]

I've noticed the same phenomenon with light bulbs.[8|]

Well there's your problem then, you don't plug in light bulbs you screw and unscrew them., so trying to plug them in is useless.

That is me too.  I always say I know just enough to be dangerous to any computer I get on. [:)]

I had a printer that did that years ago when I upgraded to my OS to XP (although I wasn't unplugging it..it just "lost" everything).  After a few months of putting up with that, I spent a little bit of money and bought a decent printer (that specified it was compatible with XP) and haven't had a bit of  trouble.

So next to hitting it with a hammer, I really have nothing to add. [:)]

Win2000 has known issues with plug and play devices, which is what USB connection does. If you restart the computer does it recognize it then? Have you powered down the printer and then powered it back up?

I'm with Orion.  I bet if you plugged in the printer again, and then turned the computer off and on again, it would work fine.

Nope doesn't do any good to do any of that, tried it already, like I said you need to un install and then re install the driver from the website so far to do any good Well least it's the only thing that works.

Then it is definately a problem with the plug and play portion of Win2000. Get the usb hub as suggested. I would not recommend you try it, but if it were me I might actually remove the USB controller driver and reinstall it, just to make sure. You can also check Epson's site and see if they offer a USB Printing support driver, I know HP offers one.

DomKen -> RE: after unplugging and replugging in printer won't workThis is a constant problem (9/24/2009 9:27:23 PM)

As others have said Win 2000 has a problem with disconnecting USB devices while the computer is turned on. The only really safe way to handle it is to turn off the computer and then unplu one device and plug in another. There is a way to have the USB driver shut down the connection so you can swap with power on but I forget how.

If the driver was being deleted then the cable disconnected notice wouldn't pop up.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: after unplugging and replugging in printer won't workThis is a constant problem (9/24/2009 9:28:21 PM)

Ok you all are going to think I am stupid and rightly so but the wrong cord was plugged in, I had the black power cord plugged in an it needed to be the white, I am so embarrassed to admit it but well I will.

Thank you again for all the help.
