terrislut -> Why is he allowed to speak? (9/24/2009 11:59:23 PM)

How can we let this guy go on telling his lies to the world?
http://www.canada.com/news/Gadhafi+rant+walkout+during+Ahmadinejad+speech+stirs+controversy+summit/2028424/story.html
We shouldn't have let him speak at the UN, he should be shut away and ignored, his lies are terrible and we shouldn't let them stand unchallenged.
At least somebody had the guts to call him on it

Without disagreeing, here's a somewhat different take on his address...

Financial Times, Gideon Rachman

Libya are in the UN, he is the leader, he gets the right to speak. Those representetives that didnt want to listen had the right to walk out, and some chose to do so. You cant have an international body and say who does or doesnt get to speak.

I agree with you and hope the UN look at the action of the Assembly Chairman ( Who is Libyan )  Your link was also very interesting, thanks for posting it.

Kirata -> RE: Why is he allowed to speak? (9/25/2009 12:57:40 AM)

~ FR ~

Notwithstanding the lead about Gadhafi in the first link, which prompted my initial response, I think she's talking about Ahmadinejad. Duhh.

Politesub53 -> RE: Why is he allowed to speak? (9/25/2009 1:02:10 AM)

Ditto Duh. [8D]

As obnoxious as some of the speakers at the UN can be, surely thats the whole whole point of the place ? A debating assembly for world leaders, more so tahn keeping anyone unliked away.

Far better to have them speak for 96 minutes than continue to supply terrorists, surely ?

As an American who values our First Amendment, I have no problem with letting people say whatever the hell they want (short of falsely yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater, etc.). Frankly, the European laws that make questioning the holocaust a crime punishable by imprisonment are more offensive to me than anything old "I'm-A-Dinner-Jacket" has to say.

Politesub53 -> RE: Why is he allowed to speak? (9/25/2009 1:22:00 AM)

I agree with that too Kirata. Several individual countries have holocaust denial laws. The EU wanted to implement it to all member states. Thankfully Britain and the Nordic Countries blocked this from going through, as a balance for free speech.

I did some reading and maybe he is right...it seems less cut and dried now.

The dictators of Iran, Libya, and Venezuela have nothing but praise for our esteemed leader. What does that tell you ?

mnottertail -> RE: Why is he allowed to speak? (9/25/2009 12:57:57 PM)

Not much.

You might cite some of this much ballyhooed esteemed praise, that has the rightie tighties all running scared.

Freedom of speech can go too far, not just when it incites fear [fox news] but also ignorance, which is how Hitler, Stalin, Thatcher, Limbaugh and GW Bush got to where they are.
But it takes fearful and ignorant people to put them there.

Are you saying that Ahmedinajad (sp) might be telling the truth?

I've been to Dachau, seen the crematoria that even in 1983 had to be painted frequently to keep the smell coming out of the walls. Took pictures of the pistol range complete with a convenient blood ditch.  Saw pictures of bodies stacked like cordwood. How do you think stacks of starved nude bodies could be "faked"?

The Holocaust happened.

If I misunderstood what you meant by that post, I apologize.

The protocol is that Libya's rep is the one responsible for advising his leader his 15 minutes are up.

However, it would be a bold Libyan minister indeed who rose to enforce this against against this leader.

P.S. -- the record is Castro, who went on for 6-7 hours (I forget exactly how long).

Those sites are peddling bullshit. I wrote an essay on just this topic a few years ago (yeah I know its geeky as Hell, but what can you do....I have another on the decline and fall of the Byzantine Empire, but the odds of that topic coming up here on CM are slim as fuck...but if it ever does, then you know for sure I will post it as well[:)]). Anyway, the essay is too long to be posted on here, but to anybody who is interested you can download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ldnjkkh3jzz/Holocaust

Thatcher wasnt elected through fear nor ignorance. She was elected due to high taxation, high unemployment and constant strikes while Labour were in power. I doubt if GWB was elected through fear and ignorance either.

*face palm*

Just because you read it on the internet doesn't mean it's true.

servantforuse -> RE: Why is he allowed to speak? (9/25/2009 3:49:14 PM)

I'm thinking that maybe that Obama was elected through ignorance. That 'change' thing is out the window, and those independant voters that put him there are leaving in great numbers.
