Ok... is this normal? Val and my wedding is on Sunday. I placed the order with the bakery for our cake at least six months ago. Today the wedding planner just happened to call and see how everything is going. They say everything is fine but that was I aware I needed a cake stand of X inches?

No... I was not aware. This is the first anyone has mentioned me having to provide a cake stand. It seems like this is the sort of thing they should have told me about maybe a few months ago so I could find one I liked. Happily, I was able to find one that we will be able to use for free but only because one of our other vendors is really awesome and goes above and beyond.

Since this is my first time getting married (and hopefully last unless we have another wedding to celebrate another partner joining us), I'm not sure it's normal to not tell the bride about a required cake stand and just assume that she knows. Anyone have a similiar or different experience?

It's never appropriate for vendors not to inform you of things like this in advance.  Your planner probably realized the bakery didn't specify.  I didn't have a cake stand for the first wedding - they just said I needed to have a table where they could put the cake.  I made my own cake the second time - and it was a great cake too.

Weddings are SO detailed, and barely any of us have the knack for keeping up with every detail perfectly without help.  I was so controlling and anal and distrustful of others the first time that I could barely delegate a thing.

The most important thing for you is to show up in your dress, get married, and have a good time.  Even if it rains, the cake gets dropped in the mud, none of the tuxes come with pants and the flower girl projectile vomits all the way up the aisle - have a good time and do not worry about anything if you can help it.

People who came to my 1st wedding remember they had a nice time - the location was good and it was a nice time of day and nice time of year.  I remember I was so stressed it was like being on another planet.  They remember some of the flubs with a smile, or not at all, burt they don't care a lick.

HAVE A GOOD TIME.  DON'T WORRY.  NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS - NO ONE IS GONNA DIE.

I'm not really upset about this or freaking out or anything. It's just... irksome and I wanted to know if a cake stand is one of those things I'm just supposed to know about. The wedding should go beautifully and I'm looking forward to it. If I could shake my cold feet...

I agree... Just enjoy your day...

My first wedding (A disastrous marriage) we did everything ourselves... set it up in her mother's back yard... rented a tent...

she baked the cake... and there are only two things that anyone remembers... How beautiful the flower girl was... and the fact that during the middle of the vows a plane flew over and we had to take a pause until the plane had passed because it was impossible to hear anything...  We totally spaced her mother lived on a landing path for Indianapolis International Airport...

Otherwise it was fun... Just wish I had paid attention more to the warning signs and not gotten married to that woman at all... (She had 16 different mental illnesses)

Congrats on your upcoming wedding day!  The bakery who you hired to make your cake should have told you at that point, you'd need a cake stand.

I would assume the bakery should provide this or the venue who will be serving the cake.  Congrats on your wedding

The bakery should have discussed this when you placed your order... did you want it on a stand? Tiered with columns?  Stacked without columns?  A combo of tiered and stacked?  Do you want a fountain on the cake?  Do you want to provide your own topper?  Do you want fresh flowers on the cake, frosting flowers, or something else?  Etc., etc., etc.  The only thing you should have known without having to be told is that the cake needs a place to be (a table).

Congratulations on the wedding!!

I have never known a bakery or private cake maker to not provide a stand.  All you should have to do is arrange for delivery or pickup.

Yeah, we talked about all that while I was there. They aren't a very fancy bakery but I used them their stuff is delicious, I'd worked with them once before and they have experience in meeting a somewhat unusual dietary requirement that we have. This is just something that was sprung on us last minute. I'm glad we ended up getting one for free cause things are really tight here!

Well, a bakery that specializes in wedding cakes would have provided it, this one doesn't and probably didn't realize it until the last minute.

Just relax.

*chuckles* I don't know if they specialize or not honestly. They advertise their wedding cake skills in the shop but don't have photographs of their previous cakes. They are an amazing little place and I've enjoyed working with them except that they have a habit of not calling me when things go wrong - they just wait until I or the wedding planner contact them for something else.
