If the intruder is on their way out I would let them leave without confronting them. It's not worth taking the chance of having the confrontation go badly for me if they are already leaving. Let them leave. If they re-entered I would fire even if it's possible they had only returned to take something else and leave.

This scenario is too often turned against the homeowner/firearm owner in this fashion. A thug makes the decision to break in to the home where they do not belong and then the onus falls upon the homeowner to decide why the intruder is there and what the appropriate response should be. If someone breaks into my home I have no way to know what their intentions are. I'm going to defend myself.
