That is called a shepard's tone I believe and there are two (or more notes) twelves spaces apart.

Since it sounds like it is stepping up the tone is being played in ascending order.

Excellent find.

If we were to speak of auditory illusions....

i can make some funky ones where sounds exist where none are played. Something about transverse waves canceling each other out except at a certain point.....

and now I am rambling.
