Very interesting thread. i have great admiration for those that do the LDR successfully. imo it takes a great deal of courage, understanding and determination. Not to mention yes financial consideration.

Maybe I am living in fantasy land but time, distance and money are not factors IF there is a connection/love. If someone truly gets my attention and my blood begins to boil, I will beg borrow and steal to put them in my presence.

HOWEVER, this is rare to find in cyberspace & my analytical mind tells me that relationships are built/cultivated and not a flight of fancy. STILL, I have been fortunate enough to have witnessed the extraordinary & daydream of it happening again.

THANKFULLY they buy their own tickets & come with presents from all across the globe.

I bought my own tickets first...that way I would be 'in control' [8|][;)] erm...anyway...

He has bought the next round of tickets...and, hmm....

let's just say as a single mother of more than one...it's rather difficult for me to manage to do this v often on my own.

I AM however a member of travelzoo. (www.travelzoo.com or net I don't know)

I recently got a round trip ticket from them from Indy to Orlando (straight thru, no layovers) for $140. round trip. (plus fees...makes it about 160.)

I didn't mean to police your posts Arpig, just didn't see the connection. I apologize if I offended you.

Padraig...as always...great thoughtful posts...thank you!

oh...and SO VERY SORRY that you weren't able to grab that brass ring....you just about broke my heart...really.

You never know what life has in store for you next, though...so...keep looking.

Padriag, you can't put a price tag on true love!

(please excuse the sarcasm dripping onto the floor)

Actually I think the problem with LDR, and especially cross continent, is you have to decide very early if you are willing to move away from your entire life for the dream -- or you are willing to ask this of another person. It is a catch 22 in that you have to examine this questions early, in order to determine if you should pour time, energy, and money into this potential relationship. And yet, you don't really have much of a basis to make this decision because you have had limited contacted and real-life "getting to know" each other time.

I don't consider LDR for anything besides casual acquaintances or friendhips. I have short people that I am unwilling to move very far away from their father at this point in their lives. So I am essentially trapped w/in a 200 miles radius of my current location. I am unwilling to ask another person to move here as the responsibility of that is too much for me. Thus...why bother? I am pretty cool about being without a promary partner anyway.

Thank you. Don't worry about me though, it was a learning experience and one that forced me to do some growing up. Sometimes life has to kick you in the shins before you face reality. That was quite a few years ago and a lot has changed since then... I've changed a lot since then. I can't say for sure what life has around the corner next, its got a perverse sense of humor with me! But what I do know is I set some goals for myself and then went after them relentlessly. If that brass ring were to come around again today, not only can I reach for it, I can afford to pay the guy who runs the carousel to stop and hand the damn thing too me!

Life will teach us all kinds of useful lessons... if we're listening.

Out of curiousity...if one is worried about expenses or immigration laws, why not start a business, you can do so for under $200 dollars in the US, it's a tax write off (travel) and its an easy way to get around the immigration hurdle. I set up my business in less than 3 hours and I travel around the world frequently and write it off as a business expense (just make sure you conduct some sort of business while you are there and it's legal). Just a thought for everyone.

That likely does not include getting a visa, or green card, does it? You are traveling, yes but are you establishing residence? For over 3 months at a time? When my cousin moved to Spain it cost her a fortune and took 18 months to get approved.

and there was me worrying about getting on a train for a journey of over an hour because of the cost of the ticket lol
