Level -> Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 3:45:45 PM)

quote:

NEW ORLEANS — A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Sounds like a lame excuse to me... [:)]

pahunkboy -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 4:14:59 PM)

..seems odd to me.

I believe he has the right to have this opinion. I can agree with him or not. In American that is how it's done. He should never have run for that office knowing he could not preform the duties. He should resign.

I don't know, he lets them use his bathroom.

Hell, they're probably even allowed to come in his house through the front door.

I agree that it is a lame excuse. But on the other hand I think that he has a point. Working for a utility for nearly 20 years in Black neighborhoods it is the kids who suffer. It seemed from my experiences that they were picked on constantly by other kids of both races. It wasn't very pretty.

No, sorry.  He doesn't have the right to his opinion when it interferes with his legal obligations.

Yeah, you're right Servant.

Maybe we can get that on the teabaggers platform for the next protest.

That inter-mixing of the races always produces bad results.  Look at that Obama guy.

Yeah but....these are people (mixed races) that cause crime...even before children become part of the equation.

It's a proven fact; 743% of all crimes are caused by people of unlike backgrounds.

Have you seen the stats on Norwegians who marry Brazilians?  (By the way...to clarify....not people who have married people who have had a Brazilian).

I've seen people who read two different papers (in towns that still have two papers)....the statistics are beyond frightening.

(I don't even want to fucking go there).

servantforuse -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 4:26:18 PM)

I just saw first hand many times where mixed race kids were the ones getting picked on. As I said before I disagree with him and see it as an excuse. It doesn't fly with me.

I concur

No, arsehole...you`re racist.

pahunkboy -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 4:37:29 PM)

As shocking as it may sound, this small town has a handful of mixed couples.  gasp.

I don't view it as a bad thing, as the couples seem quite happy.

The Judge is not suppose to make law- merely interpret existing law.

Somehow I think this is being done for some extraneous political reason.

tnai -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 4:45:27 PM)

Yeah, almost as messed up as trying to tie in ever scum bag in the new to the people you disagree with!

(Or maybe the JP is just a racist prick)

But don't tell anyone I said that.

Level -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 4:55:38 PM)

Now, a JP does not have to do weddings; it isn't exactly the same as him refusing to hear a case, or perform an inquest.

Knowing that, is there any sort of statute that could be used to remove him? Or would it fall solely on his constituents?

mefisto69 -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 5:09:25 PM)

...... is there Anyone in Louisiana NOT of mixed race?

Level -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 5:20:15 PM)

Down here, which race is in the mix matters, sadly.

Marc2b -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 5:24:03 PM)

What a crock of shit! If the man can’t do his job he should resign. Who cares how long inter-racial marriages last – it is completely irrelevant to the performance of his duties.

How difficult it is for mixed race children (technically an impossibility because when it comes to people there is only one race – the human race, still, these are the terms we use) is also irrelevant. I have a grand niece and grand nephew who are both mixed race. They are perfectly normal, happy, kids with plenty of friends and a large diverse family that loves them.

Edited to add: Fucking bigots. Piss me off every time.

DesFIP -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 5:46:23 PM)

45 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and this is still going on? Unbelievable.

littlewonder -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (10/15/2009 6:04:52 PM)

Ya know, I have family of mixed race. Never once did I see or hear of them having problems with others, being picked on, etc...not once, and they grew up in a small majority white small town in PA and suburban VA.

They seemed to fit in quite well in both places so this excuse that they have a rough time imo is bullshit.

Yes maybe back in the 50's, 60's and even 70's but it's the millenia. I think it's not so common anymore for mixed children to have the problems they once did.

I think this JP is stuck in a time warp and hasn't moved on.
