Those of you who live where the leaves drop their leaves this time of year, please remember. Leaves all over the road that have been rained on can be as slick as any ice you have ever driven on. Be careful. Maybe I can save someone a fender bender. And, NO, it hasnt happened to Me LOL.

Around here, it is the deer to watch for, even moreso, this time of year.

Yeah, I'm in west central minnesota, deer, wild turkeys, real ice, drunks like me, so we ain't too scared of the leaves.

Oh yes, I hit a turkey a few years ago...........they leave quite a dent!

On the carpool drive home from work we were just discussing the variety of wildlife we have clobbered and what we have avoided. I've been quite lucky to avoid hitting any skunks.

And I am very glad I do not live where there are moose!

Only animal I have ever hit was a cat. I had to swerve all OVER the damn place to get it too. (just kidding)

Nothing like having a beautiful 8 pt slam into the side of your car, denting the hell out of it and putting you in the ditch only to watch that sucker bound away...he at least could have died so I'd get some meat geezz.....

And remember.....where there is one deer, there are usually more!!! The most damage anyone in our family ever sustained from hitting wildlife was the time my mom popped a pheasant with our Corvair. Damn thing poked a hole in the radiator...they had to get a new one, it couldn't get patched up.

Twisted, my mom got ran into by a deer in my dad's (then) new truck.....scared the crap outta her, she pretty much did the ditch thing too.....took out the deer, but was okay til the deputy shot it...then she started crying cuz she felt bad that the deer died. We're a bunch of softies, I have hit squirrels and even a hawk once...damn thing ran into me....and drove down the road bawling about it. I felt really bad about the hawk....I probably only stunned it, but the car behind me ran it over. He swooped down over the interstate right into the path of my car. I didn't see him til it was too late to get out of his way.

You are SOOOOO busted. Corvairs did not have radiators, they were air cooled. You guys must've had a really crooked mechanic or something.

Incidentally, what I was going to say before, this is Ohio. People don't even slow down for actual ice, on leaves they will put the pedal to the metal. I always take the first ice day of the year off because I know it will take me four hours to travel 7.6 miles to work.

I would far rather share the roads with people who don't know how to drive in rain or snow, than with those who think they do...

Leaves and rain are not a good mix either. I narrowly avoided hitting a bear a couple of years ago. My oldest got stuck in a traffic jam for an hour on a college break after the car ahead of her hit a bear. Nobody dared get out of their car and help the driver until after the cops showed up and finished off the bear. Deer around here are about 150 pounds, bear 400 - 800. Horses 1000-1800. Moose weigh about what a bigger horse does.

Tractor trailer drivers don't always survive a moose crash. Cars have lower odds.

Not this last rain storm but the one before it, Someone slammed on their breaks in front of Daddies car, and even though he wasn't going very fast he slid into her, and smashed the whole front of the car in, and since he was on a pizza delivery for work, if they wanted to they could of fired him for the accident, but thank goodness they didn't.

I saw a lot of idiots hot footing it on Tuesday in the middle of a severe storm. I guess they figure if they hot foot it they'll get home and be safer faster.

One of my favourite ER stories was the day the ambulance bought in four people from a wreck. Now, this is in Arkansas, where a little snow is a reason to stock up on milk and bread, and take the day off - i asked the driver what they were doing, since the authorities had asked that people not drive because of the ice under the pretty snow - his reply was that they were just driving to look at the snow!!!!!

Except for the fact that no-one actually died, they could have received a Darwin award. I wanted to whap him up the side of his head - it wouldn't have caused brain damage - he didn't have any!

Well, then, maybe you can explain to me why we had to stop every few miles to put water in it under the hood.....I never claimed to be a mechanic, I'm just saying what happened. But I do know that water goes into a radiator.

When I worked for the state police, we prayed that the first major snow happened on our days off.....it's like people get into their cars and leave their common sense in the damn driveway!!!!! In AZ, it was the start of the monsoon season.....people there drive thru standing water, and then call for help when they have to be rescued. AZ actaully has a stupid driver law.....anyone that drives into standing water and has to use public services to be rescued gets billed for it...and it ain't cheap! Especially when they have to use a chopper to get you out.

What I love is the idiots in 4WD vehicles.......they seem to think that they can do 75 in any type of weather.....unfortnately, stopping in one of those is the same as trying to stop in a 2WD vehicle....you need just as much room to do it. And why don't they get the fact that they are top heavy, and flip over at one good gust of a crosswind? I'd get passed by one doing about 70 in a driving snow, and then just honk and wave when I passed them in the ditch miles down the road.

Maybe you got the name mixed up ? Corvette, corsica, chevette ? A lot of Chevies names started with a C. That doesn't even count other brands. Corrolas, Camrys, all that.

Can you think of what year the car was ? Corvairs were only built for about a half dozen years or so, when they were pulled off the market because of the exhaust fired heater. They leaked CO into the cabin. Ralph Nader didn't like this at all. Personally I didn't care, a bit of welding and you had a nice beater, but without a heater.

Actually I understand what people are saying about people who can't drive. I could always drive, and my first car had a hood long enough to sleep on and enough horsies to make a western movie. I was really a menace to society. Not because I lacked skill behind the wheel, I am an expert at driving sideways, backwards, squeezing through places where all the passengers have to close their eyes, all that. The difference is the judgement. Now I see poorly, I am much older and slower, but judgement more than makes up for it.

At any rate, an image search on Google will yield plenty of pics of Corvairs. We might not be talking about the same car here. But those little shitcans were fun. They usually had a pretty decent V6 and better yet many were stick shift. Rear engine, and the engine was not really a V6, it was more like a pancake 6. Actually with a few modifications it would be a good car for today.

And being in Ohio with a four wheel drive I have to remember that part of this prayer, always let me remember that even though this will go faster, it will not stop faster.

Yup, soon it will be time for me to take off work and not go anywhere. The idiots will be out and in Ohio you have to give them a few days to fill up the hospitals, jails and morgues. After that the rest of us will be fine. It's just one of those things about living here.
