Percoset: "I have yet to hear of an atheist cloister, atheist monastery or an atheist Mother Teresa."

I've yet to hear of athiests who have called for a jihad, trained suicide bombers, supported terrorisim, or denied an interracial couple a marriage lisence.

You know what else you don't see? You don't see athiests pushing their agenda into sunday schools. But you sure as hell see the religious types trying to stick a crowbar into science classes with "creationisim" and/or "Intelligent Design."  So really, who is lest respectful of the other's freedoms here?

Stupidity, where religion is concerned, seems to be contagious.

trained suicide bombers

This part made me laugh!  We dont know they are trained... until they bomb.  umm... how do we know they arent atheist?  maybe they prefer the sketti monster?  maybe scientology?  do we now go on what they may say after they are caught?  religion used to be a quick way to gain a form of mercy from the US courts.  Its easy to convince people one is brain washed if you claim the crime is based upon religion.

There is no reason for atheists to get together and deny themselves any particular thing, therefore no cloister. If you go to the local bar and grill you will find plenty of atheists willing to use it as a monastery. For every Mother Teresa, there is at least one Bernardo Gui, so that's a wash.

How does one train a suicide bomber? It would seem a job where everyone is a rookie. A trained suicide bomber is like a Kamikaze veteran, isn't it?

tazzygirl -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 9:33:03 AM)

With one exception... the final is the bombing.  Cant be considered trained until you take the final, no?

mnottertail -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 9:33:44 AM)

training? simple.

strap this on, flick this switch, hold your hands firmly on the wheel at 10 and 2 oclock, and hit the gas.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 9:39:19 AM)

(sorry about the momentary hijack, everyone)

Tazzy, suicide bombers are recruited from families whom the mullas have identified as being ripe for use. Usually they are poor, desperate, and without one or both parents. They put pressure on younger members of these families with promises of taking care of the candidate bomber's relatives finacially after they have completed their mission, and also by telling prospective bombers that they will be rewarded in heaven (the whole 72 virgins thing) Once recruited they are taken to facilities where they are trained in how to arm and set off the bombs they are supplied with. They are trained to place themselves in crowds, and/or near targets that are of stratigic or symbolic importance before killing themselves. They are trained in how to keep the explosives hidden until the last possible moment. And they are trained to avoid taking out the TV news crews, due to their importance in the spread of propaganda.

Sounds far more political than religious, dont ya think?

MarsBonfire -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 9:46:48 AM)

I'd say it's yet another abuse of religion to achieve a monsterous, political violence.  But to deny that religion hasn't been a part of this kind of mass murder is to be just blind.

tazzygirl -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 9:49:56 AM)

You can make that argument for any kind of abuse.  Just because someone says... "Its because our religion demands that of us" doesnt make it true... or right.

Just like the government saying one day... "All buildings will have the word "God" as part of the design, doesnt make it religious, because religion does not demand such, does it.

What an absolutely horrifying title. Also a complete crock of  s***.  Not that I could ever live that lifestyle, but there are men and women who sacrifice their entire lives to do good for the community by going into the consecreated life. I don't think you can say that in terms of the atheist community. I have yet to hear of an atheist cloister, atheist monastery or an atheist Mother Teresa.

Which means what?

That only the religious do things to benefit others?  Only the religious practice charity?

By the way, you don't have to use the asterisks, you can say shit on here.

Your desire to defend faith and religion seems to be getting the better of you.

Jihadists aren't religious?

tazzygirl -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 10:09:55 AM)

Never said they were or that they were not.  It was offered that it was never proven an atheist commited such a crime.  My response was... how do we know the bombers were religious?  Based upon those who tell us so?

I think it's pretty much an accepted fact.

tazzygirl -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 10:19:34 AM)

We accepted for a long time that creationism was the way to go... we now know better.  We accepted for years that aids was only among the gay community and drug users.  again, not true.

Just because someone accepts something.... doesnt make it true.

Come on Tazzy.

Are you really going to try and argue Jihadist suicide bombers are not doing it based on their religious beliefs?

tazzygirl -> RE: Believer(s) of god are plague to this world. (10/18/2009 10:49:58 AM)

I am saying there is no proof they are or they arent.  All we have to go on is what those who put them in that place, by religious means according to those here, are saying.

A religious war is always better than a political one.  Slapping the name "religion" on it doesnt make it a religious war if it goes against what the religion believes.  And just because someone twists that meaning doesnt make it the fault of religion, but the fault of the one twisting... or are we now going to start blaming the girls again who wear crotch hugging skirts when they get raped?

Like I said earlier, you are letting your desire to defend faith and religion cloud your judgment.

There is no real question this terrorism has been inspired by religious belief but you are trying to split hairs and say that it is not the the fault of the religion but of those twisting the religion.

But if they did not have the basis in an absolute belief system such as that religion would we have this problem?

Should not really be removing the appendix then I suppose or the tonsils.

There are Christians who believe that:
