Status: offline 		No I don't expect anyone ot diagnose my car troubles on a message board. But I am having a problem and would like some thoughts from those in the know as to what it MIGHT be so that I don't go walking into a shop sounding like an idiot...and so I don't end up paying way too much for things I most likely DON'T NEED.

GMC Jimmy. Had my power steering quit when I was turning the wheel to get out of a tight spot. There was no fluid loss on the ground and the power steering fluid is full. I only have one belt that runs it all and it seems to be working fine. Only thing is that it's a real bear to try and steer the dang thing now. Any thoughts on what it could or could not be?????

But my Master is. Arg him for being sleeping.. (arg with me now....... arg!) He can hear "problems" just by driving the dang vechicule.. and he fixes em and he's like "see you dont hear that noise anymore" And i'm like What noise? i never heard nuthin!

Hit me up in IM later on.. couple of hours.. when he's awake.. and i'll have him come over and help you figure it out.

ya know writing this.. reminded me how ungodly skilled he is in so many fricken areas. Its a fricken list.. i suppose he'd make a good submissive, dontcha think?

Sounds like the power steering pump is shot.

Could also be that part of the steering rack assembly is bad.

Ok... the belt is on but is it tight? Sometimes the nut can back off the adjustment bracket and the belt will stay on but it isn't actually tight enough to make the power steering function. Grab the belt and {with the ignition off} feel for how much ''slop'' is there....if it feels tight, I'd to concur with Pollux and say that the pump froze up. They aren't that expensive and relatively easy to change.


Lot of times before they freeze up.... they emit a semi high-pitched ''whining'' sound.

Status: offline 		Thanks you guys. I am going to take it down and have them check the pump. Checked the belt...it does seem tight. It really doesn't move more than maybe a 1/4 inch if I push/pull on it. It didn't make any odd noises at all....it just locked up the steering mid turn.

These are exactly the times that I HATE being single. Not that I expect a Dominant to be lying in the ice and snow fixing my car...but at least I might not have to walk into one of these places alone. I know they see me coming and that I don't know a thing about this kind of stuff. I feel like I might as well just bend over right when I walk in the door because most likely that's whats going to happen anyway. Oh well...wish me luck......

The wonderful thing about the Internet is that you can research your problem before you go in to find out possible causes. I know that there is a program on the radio called Car Talk. They also have a website but I am not sure if they can answer individual questions or not. Perhaps there is a message board forum there. Those guys know what they are talking about.

i once accidently broke the power steering line under the car when i got stuck trying to get out of a driveway in the snow. i took the car into the dealership, said i had no idea what had happened but it just started having trouble turning, and they fixed the car for free.

Not like i broke it on purpose, though.

I've also been single much of my adult life, and I've found that walking into a dealership or repair shop or having repairmen come to your home, and just throwing out a few words that make it seem as if you know a little bit about what's going on really changes their attitude.

One time, I had a problem with the water pump in my house (had a well). I was pretty sure that it was a recurring problem of silt building up in the holding tank, and I suggested that to Larry, Darryl & Darryl when they arrived to fix it. Instead, they made a big show of crawling under and around the house to "check" the pumps and dramatically told me that I had no pressure at all, that I was going to need a new pump AND a well dug, and it could cost me $6000!!!!

My son had taken a shower 1/2 hour before they arrived, so I knew that it was unlikely that the pump had suddenly worn out. I asked them if they had shut the breaker off. They looked sheepishly at each other, I went to the breaker box, and sure enough, someone had shut the breaker switch off. I strongly suggested they go check the holding tank. They cleaned the silt out, problem was solved, and the bill was $135.

Status: offline 		Pollux and Utopian have to be right about the pump, there's a pretty limited number of things that it can be given your description. Be sure to post a follow-up for confirmation.

The steering rack is most likely fine - at least it's far less likely the problem.

Status: offline 		Well, GM stands for Gods Mistake, sometimes the return valves take a dump depending on the steup, could you give a better description?
Is there a change in sound? Is it hard to steer both left and right? Does it make any sounds when you have the steering turned all the way to the left or right.
Also you might want to turn on the car and obeserve the PS pulley while the car is idling.

EDIT: forgot to add what year is it?

PPS Please check the hoses again just to be sure there is 2 hoses one going to the pistons and one is a return hose, park the car over a big peice of cardboard and check for leaks.

Status: offline 		Moloch has given wonderful advice...also be aware that a hose can collapse internally or the pump can fail internally. In both situations fluid fails to be pumped through; assisting in the steering of your C4 candidate.

A technician (means he/she gets more than $12.50/hr) should be able to diagnose ths fairly quickly.

A remanufactured pump for this shouldn't run more than $85.00...hose somewhere around $35.00. If you have a problem locating these parts email Me.....I'm in the auto parts biz.

Status: offline 		Thanks to all who responded. Turned out it was a broken shaft in or leading to the power steering pump. The mechanic said that he has seen a pretty fair number of them lately and thinks that GM might have a casting issue with that part. I don't know if that's right or not...but it's fixed now.
