i am a slave so i can't really put myself in the shoes of a Domme only under them. [:)] But i thought about how funny it would be to make up arbitrary rules for a slave. Like the slave may never eat ice cream. Why because i said so. lol What are some very arbitrary rules You enforce on Your slaves. slavey

The problem with that is the dominant has to remember and enforce the rules. So what happens when the dominant forgets and takes the sub out for an ice cream. Does he she obey the day's order to choose a flavor or a silly order from months ago not to eat it? Beyond that, if you load a sub down with foolish rules, they are likely to lose respect for you.

Either the silly rules are instead of important ones, in which case everything's whack, or else they're in addition to the important ones, in which case they're a burden to track.

We've done arbitrary assignments before - like making rob write a report on hermit crabs. But arbitrary rules? blah, too much effort LOL

I believe that one was sparked when rob made the mistake of making fun of our pet hermit crab not too long after he moved in with us LOL

I suppose some of my rules are arbitrary-sounding, but they have reasons. You may worship my left foot, but not my right one. All laundry must be immediately folded and put away once it is dry. Hot tea: White, sweet, strong. Iced tea: Green, weak, unsweetened. Of course, there are reasons for these, they just aren't obvious. Nerve damage in my right foot means sometimes casual touches read as pain. The elderly cat likes to pee in full laundry baskets, and it's amazing how fast she'll hit a fresh basket of towels. Hot tea is drunk 8 ounces at the most every hour. Iced tea is drunk at the rate of about 2-3 gallons a day (I have dry mouth). If I make it too strong, I get heart palpitations. I don't think any good rule is arbitrary.

Your cat sounds vaguely like mine - only for me, his litter box has to be spotless and all laundry/stuffed animals/fabric things have to be up off of the floor at all times in case a dog gets in, or he pees on things in protest lol Your rules sound perfectly reasonable to me - and no problems remembering them like there might be if they were truly arbitrary.

Someone said once that since it's mainly due to senility, I should put her down. I said, "When I am ninety, and I am too senile to keep my dentures in or use the bathroom consistently, I would hope someone will clean up my mess without making me feel humiliated about my lapse, listen to me tell the same story again, and keep me from hurting myself, sit with me when I eat and remind me that I am eating. She's not in pain yet. She's not having a bad quality of life. It's not time yet." Her issue is that she doesn't want to use a box the other two have used. I don't have a problem giving her one of her own, but I haven't mastered that inter-species communication thing to tell the others not to use it...they pragmatically just go for the nearest one.

As mentioned, some 'arbitrary' rules have hidden meaning. When I first started talking to my now released WestPet, I had him fix a cup of coffee for me, take a photo of it and email it to me every morning by 6:15 am. I didn't give a damn about the coffee. I just wanted him UP and at the computer waiting for me when I logged on every morning. It wasn't that long before I let the coffee slide because he was a good a faithful pup who was always there waiting for me.

I don't do useless tasks, rules, or rituals. Everything My boy does for Me, I have a reason for.

I have never felt the need or desire to create rules, or punishments, just because I can. I have a friend that feels it is an integral part of her M/s structure. There are many rules and punishments she creates simply because she feels it is what a mistress does. Through many discussions, she has come to realize that her way is not the "one true way" she once believed it to be. It is simply her way. She also has the luxury of not needing to work or have her slave work. Much more free time for senseless games. I am more purpose oriented. For me to put effort into something, or demand someone else do so, I need there to be a purpose beyond "just because I am the boss and I can".

If the litter box is the slightest bit icky he'll find any spare box or laundry basket he can. He's fixed etc... I think his comes from not wanting to share the litter box with our girl. She will use it no matter how bad it gets...

I've gotten weird research assignments but not for no reason. How to build a concrete shower was the last. By the time I found the basics for it, he priced and estimated the time it would take, the client gave up and used the recommended big gray tiles instead.

I just posted an "arbitrary" rule that I have been given on the submissives board. I am not permitted make up. I know it's not entirely arbitrary, which irritates me. When asked, however, "Because I said so!" [&:] The thing with arbitrary rules is it can be a burden or more trouble than it's worth when it is a whole big pile of them and they actually ARE abitrary. This is one of only a handful in our relationship and believe me he has NO trouble tracking them and I know somewhere in the depths of his brain he has his very real reasons. I was very cautious to ask if I could wear foundation and nothing else to a play party we attended. I knew if I tried to do it and get away with it, it would be hell to pay and we were going where there were entirely too many ouchie things and only witnesses who weren't going to be helpful to me in the least! LOL lovingpet
