If you're a switch, you don't need to be both dominant and submissive simultaneously, though I currently am experiencing it (toward two different people). If someone is into S/M as a top and/or bottom, or into D/s, I don't generally consider them to be vanilla. However, if they are engaging in the activity or service or whatever only to please their partner, but not out of submission, more "I'm not into it, but I don't really mind," and both top and bottom, they could be considered a vanilla switch. For example, when my playpartner's husband joined us for the playpiercing scene/class last weekend, he inserted one needle. He's not sadistic, he considers himself to be vanilla, but he's willing to give it a try to make her happy. If he also had received one in order to experience how it felt, or got thwacked by the cane (say lightly and playfully), I suppose you could call him a "vanilla switch." I'm having a harder time seeing how power exchange could play into it, since it isn't really "vanilla" even if there isn't any pain or bondage involved.
