GoddessImaginos -> RE: Harassment via CM e-mail using multiple profiles (10/20/2009 1:24:55 PM)

I have had at least three of this type, who upon being turned down or otherwise not catered to, thought it would be really cute to try the multiple-profile thing. One winner cmailed Me from L.A. frothing at the mouth about politics and told Me that I was going to die (it's like *DUH* stupid, so are you, SOMEday..). A couple of others, like the OP's little friend, couldn't get it through their heads how patently uninteresting they were and keep making new profiles to tell Me what a flaming Bitch I was for not wanting them as is (more like, as IF). The thing is to not let it bother you. The ones who say they can track down where you live and crap like that (yes, I had Me one of those too, he was so funny, bless his wee heart) are bullshitting you to get a reaction. The trick then is to not give them one, which is the one way in which all of these loonies are the same: they *HATE* to be ignored. That is, therefore, the best solution IMO, and My personal favorite.

Just keep deleting emails from his user name un read, and you do have filters on your profile, try filtering him out.

I met someone here on CM one time before my Master and I met each other. He found a partner, and I figured that was the end of it, and exchanged the occasional casual e-mail. Once my Master and I got involved, he sent me a message that was out of line, I told him to stop, and blocked him. Since then, he's been popping up once a month or so with a new profile, trying to make me pity him.

I am a mod on another message board.  (silver)   When I ban someone it goes by IP.    Not that alot of people have been banned- but we never had anyone come back yet.

subtlebutterfly -> RE: Harassment via CM e-mail using multiple profiles (10/20/2009 1:33:07 PM)

Each ISP has their own IPs.
Each IP within the ISP has a certain range..if you ban an IP the ban usually bans that IP-s range within the ISP...so if other users using the same ISP happen to get that IP when they come online, they will not be able to access your message board. The ban is not limited to the one person you banned.

God I feel geeky.
and gosh explaining in writing has never been my strongest point..I wanna draw a picture[&o]

That makes sense.

I have to watch what I do because the owner has the final say.
I don't want to upset people...

Yeah, I'm familiar with how IP addresses are assigned dynamically and generally change at each login. I haven't responded to him since June, and have blocked him each time, so he comes up with a new profile name. I guess I'll just have to delete everything I don't recognise, or look at profiles first more carefully. I'm not searching anyway, but occasionally people contact me with questions or comments about my posts here on the forums. He hasn't made any sexual comments or physically threatened me, but the tone of the e-mails was very guilt-trippy and a couple sounded like they were verging on suicidal, and were very critical/insulting toward my Master. He has my cell phone number (or at least had it initially), but hasn't phoned except shortly after we initially met. I'm worried he'll hassle me that way as well, but since he hasn't after all this time, I assumed he lost it. He does not have my first or last name.

The comment about the eighth grade was a bit much.  I was thinking more like kindergarten.  [8D]

If the guy is using multiple screen names to contact you, just delete it when you know it's him.  Don't answer it and don't waste your time on it.  Sooner or later, he'll get the hint.

I went through the same type of harassment. As far as the cm and other email harassament, what LadyPact, suggest is what worked for me. Nowadays, If I don't recognize the emailer, I usually just delete the email unread. Also if you are really tempted to open an email, reading the profile of the person before opening the message can, sometimes, be helpful as well.

CM does have a policy against harassment.
Tell him to stop emailing you and if he persists report him.

And/or do what Ron suggests: check out the profile first and if it seems fishy, delete it unread and block him.

Reporting someone on CM is a waste of time.

If you use the report feature, you get a message telling you that they don't check reports until they've gotten enough complaints about the individual profile.

If you post thread asking for moderator assistance, you get an e-mail bitching at you to not use the forums for reporting and to use the report feature described above.

You have mail, Anda.

pahunkboy -> RE: Harassment via CM e-mail using multiple profiles (10/21/2009 2:03:10 PM)

...well this raises a larger question/

Stopping or lessening stalking online in general.   Like someone who does a search to learn everywhere the person has ever posted.

daintydimples -> RE: Harassment via CM e-mail using multiple profiles (10/21/2009 2:29:07 PM)

Harassment has been going on since the internet was conceived. And BTW - there is no real way to ban someone who is determined to stalk you online. Proxy servers are cheap.

Since then, he's been popping up once a month or so with a new profile, trying to make me pity him. It has been escalating, but not outright threats or vulgar language, so I'm not sure how/if to report him, but it's making me very uncomfortable. I discussed the situation with my Master (the second e-mail of this nature was just before I became his), and he has ordered me to end contact. I've passed that on to the person in question, telling him not to contact me, before blocking that profile. Since then, he's made up other names, and tracked me down on Fetlife as well, whining and complaining about my Master and me being so mean to him. I haven't insulted him, or done anything to him, I just don't feel comfortable or safe in talking with him, even when he wanted to "just be friends." In his latest one this morning, with yet another name, he claimed to be "leaving the site" and went off again. I'm really getting concerned about his obsession with me, and I ceratinly don't trust that he'll actually stay away and leave me alone. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation?

Yes, I've been going through it for nearly a year but not here on CM.  This is through my phone, personal email and another message board.

I set my cell to not ring unless the incoming number is in my contacts.  I can always check voicemail and call back if necessary.  I set up a folder for all the email and immediately file the unread messages in the folder (for legal documentation if necessary).  I've had to request messages with my identifying information be deleted when he posts them.  (Just this week, I had to request about 8 be deleted and have asked that they ban him.  Not sure if they did or not.)

On one hand, I wish he'd find someone else to be "smitten" over but on the other hand, no one should have to deal with that crap.

I'd delete any mail that comes from profiles that appear "off" and I wish you luck.

Edited for punctuation.

There is a way to report harassment that does not involve either one of those methods.
Harassment is against the terms of service.

Excellent. I recieved a spam mail today that I would love to report and have them actually act on the report instead of waiting for dozens of reports.

I previously have recieved e-mails that were blatantly illegal and had no method for reporting them other than the link that I refer to.

Please tell me about this other method for reporting and how members are advised of this OTHER reporting method that you describe. I seem to have missed it. (Not that my missing something should come as a big surprise.)

Excellent. NOW, tell me how we are directed in a method to report harrassment or other illegal activity.

How does the reporting differ?

A brick upside his head should solve the problem. As long as it's done when you are publicly out to dinner with a large group of friends.

Again, a vote for excellence.

Now a question. How does CM advertise these methods of reporting???

Better yet, why have I been chastised for trying to report people spamming illegal activity such as off shore accounts instead of being re-directed to a proper way of reporting. It would seem to me that a moderator would be aware of the links you have provided, but they aren't. They just bitch about "Do IT RIGHT" instead of providing information on how to do it right.

Frankly, the administration of this forum is crap. They bitch about the rules but don't bother to say what the rules are. I'm outta here.

I would send an e-mail saying "Delete my account", but I have no idea where to send it to because I'm really not sure of the proper manner to contact a moderator....much less an administrator.

I hope YOU are an administrator so you can delete the account, but you haven't come out as such so who knows.

If you look at the bottom of your home page(the page where you sign in all the time)at the bottom there are links stating the spam policy, a link for the terms of service, and a link for support(by the way, the moderators on this side have nothing to do with that, so they would assume you see the links when you sign in, as angelikaj apparently did) . If you would like to close your account, you can either 1) go to the HELP button (on the left side of the page where all the other ones are) Those are the most frequently asked questions on site, and I bet just about every one you just stated is there. The other way you can close your profile is 2) go into edit profile(the same place where you typed it in ) and at the top of that page is 1) close account and 2) delete account. Those are two different things, you might want refer back to help or support. I'm thinking you want to delete yours, but READ what they are,(when you click one of those buttons ANOTHER help blurb comes up)As far as reporting what you consider fakes scams etc...on EVERY journal entry, email, profile, picture, post on this side also.EVERY user contributed item has the possibility of being reported. If you click the button, instead of trying to get a moderator that is not involved with that activity, your report will be routed in the proper manner and direction, all automatically. If you still have any questions, please contact support, or keep this paragraph should you decide to stay, ashould you have the need to report ANYTHING. Also, since you stated you wanted to know the rules, that would be the button marked Terms of Service , also on the bottom of your home page.

edited to add: Im coming out as an administrator, and I'm not going to delete your account either (that was a tongue in cheek joke, by the way). There are buttons to guide you along your way. Write support if you have any further questions.
