So. I have this little perversion. I like when songs get done by different artists, in different styles.

cover |ˈkəvər|
verb [ trans. ]

7 record or perform a new version of (a song) originally performed by someone else : other artists who have covered the song include U2.

Sometimes I even like a cover better than the original. For instance, I like Dolly Parton's bluegrass-styled cover of 'Stairway to Heaven' better than the original, & I say that knowing it's probable blasphemy to some, lol . . . . .

& it leads to the notion that some will have canons of sancrosanct material, untouchable songs. Songs so good in the original that doing a cover is nearly criminal, according to this or that taste.

I have promiscuous musical tastes, & I have a voracious taste for covers. I acquired several versions of the song 'Mad World' (originally by Tears for Fears), one of them techno. My son pointed out it was like gilding the lily to take what was already a wonderful song & then add something else like it being techno (which he likes a lot), making it 'too much good stuff' . . . .. His point being, it's 'better' to take a crappier song & make it better by techno-ifying it, lol . . . .

Okay, this is a silly-serious thread.

Do you like covers? Any really weird, notable, etc ones? Do you despise the very notion of covers to the core of your being? Go ahead, share . ...

Thanks!

Normally I'm not a fan of covers. Why mess with an already good thing? That said, there are very few covers that I enjoy far more than the original.

" I Will Survive" ~ Cake
"Sympathy for the Devil" Guns&Roses
"Hurt" ~ Johnny Cash

O.O O.O O.O

Johnny did a whole bunch of rockin' covers, especially in the last years . . . . Neil Diamond's 'Solitary Man' & Tom Petty's 'Won't Back Down' stand out, alongside Reznor's 'Hurt' . . . . . (There's another one for me, 'Hurt', where a cover (Johnny's) is probably better than the original . . . . . )

Usually I have an immediate dislike for a singer doing a cover song and trying to "improve" the original! I find it takes a damn good singer to be able to do a cover song that either equals the original or rarely does a better job!

Wynona's "I Want Know What Love Is"
Reba  "RESPECT"
LeAnn Rimes " Unchained Melody"
Jann Arden "Son of A Preacher Man"
Holly Woods " What About Love"
Taylor Dayne " Can't Get Enough of Your Love"

The Cash version just blows me away every time. There is a poignancy to it that brings me to tears. A little something for you

Hope it works...although I will confess to do being under the influence of Nyquil at the moment so no promises.

I love Amii Stewart's version of Knock on Wood, it has a life to it that previous versions just seem to lack.

I have a fondness for this:

Famous Blue Raincoat

It is the particular way he performs it, emotes it.

I like Jeff Buckley's cover of Cohen's Hallelujah.

I like Katell Keinig's cover of Drake's River Man

Oh, and this makes me giggle:

Is it still a cover when it is a different version of a song but by the same artist? The one that comes to mind is Leyla by Eric Clapton. Loved both versions.

Also loved most all versions of Heard It Through the Grapevine.

And was impressed with the Brooks and Dunn version of My Maria (B.W. Stevenson)

But usually I prefer that the original just be left alone.

I like Jimmy Buffett's cover of "Brown Eyed Girl" and Karen Carpenter's rendition of "Desperado".

A great CD to buy for fans of covers, and Elton John, is Two Rooms. A couple of duds on it, but overall, some good shit.

Seeing you list Sea of Love I wondered if you've heard the Cat Power version. Not better than the original but still a quirky little cover of it
