Moonhead -> RE: Palin/Opra: Strange Political Bedfellows (10/22/2009 5:29:18 AM)

It's very unlikely that the Republicans would give Palin a second nomination: they want to win the election in 2012 now that Obama's been stuck with the responsibility for the godawful mess two terms of Bush made of the country.

servantforuse -> RE: Palin/Opra: Strange Political Bedfellows (10/22/2009 6:11:48 AM)

The republicans didn't give Palin a first nomination. She was picked as a running mate by Senator McCain. The RNC has nothing to do with his pick.

kittinSol -> RE: Palin/Opra: Strange Political Bedfellows (10/22/2009 6:15:46 AM)

Riiiiiiiight. And the fact that the conservative base of the GOP supported this clown in a skirt so completely has absolutely nothing to do with McCain's choice [sm=biggrin.gif] .

Your ability to rewrite history is truly astounding: have you considered a career in the secret service [8|] ?

I thought McCain wanted Leiberman.  Palin was pushed onto McCain by the RNC.

Yep.

"By the spring, the McCain campaign had reportedly sent scouts to Alaska to start vetting Palin as a possible running mate. A week or so before McCain named her, however, sources close to the campaign say, McCain was intent on naming his fellow-senator Joe Lieberman, an independent, who left the Democratic Party in 2006. David Keene, the chairman of the American Conservative Union, who is close to a number of McCain’s top aides, told me that “McCain and Lindsey Graham”—the South Carolina senator, who has been McCain’s closest campaign companion—“really wanted Joe.” But Keene believed that “McCain was scared off” in the final days, after warnings from his advisers that choosing Lieberman would ignite a contentious floor fight at the Convention, as social conservatives revolted against Lieberman for being, among other things, pro-choice.
“They took it away from him,” a longtime friend of McCain—who asked not to be identified, since the campaign has declined to discuss its selection process—said of the advisers. “He was furious. He was pissed. It wasn’t what he wanted.” Another friend disputed this, characterizing McCain’s mood as one of “understanding resignation.”

Quite frankly, it makes far too much sense.  I'm very familiar with Sen. McCain.  I may not like him, but, he's never been a stupid man.  The moment Palin arrived on the scene, it's precisely what he became.  In many ways, it seemed like he was throwing the whole election from that moment on.  He just suddenly became a blabbering lunatic.  And then, his concession speech.  That was classic, eloquent, intelligent McCain.  He has, if not always, at least normally, done what he feels best for the country.  Even if it meant him losing  position or face.  It seemed that when they dropped her onto his lap, he knew right then and there that he had to lose.  Que the funny faces, the "my friends", the various idiotic shenanigans.  All the things that were patently not McCain.  Again, I may not like him much, or agree on his stance on a lot of things, but, I did always have a good amount of respect for him.

tazzygirl -> RE: Palin/Opra: Strange Political Bedfellows (10/22/2009 6:45:10 AM)

I agree with you.  Personally, i feel like the RNC knew what was coming, and offered Palin as a way to "lose".  Face it, no party wanted to deal with this mess.

Though, i would love to know why McCain voted against the rape bill.

That is a fine question, that and why did he vote against veterans spending, while at the same time continued to harp about being a veteran.  That part right there is what took his vote away from me.  The rape bill, I have to wonder if someone else didn't try to tack other crap and fluff onto it.  I haven't had a chance to look at the whole thing as it was voted on yet, so I really couldn't say.  He is also one of the three that voted against the Ryan White act originally.

I have a feeling though, that the points are all going to be academic soon.  Not sure why, but I think after his term is up this time, he's going to retire.

LaTigresse -> RE: Palin/Opra: Strange Political Bedfellows (10/22/2009 6:55:05 AM)

Yes, I never disliked McCain, even while I rarely agreed with him. Prior to Palin, I felt that he was serving his country as he felt he could best serve. With Palin, I lost any respect I may have had, for McCain the man.

See, with the change he had after/during that, I'd have to say that, if my theory is correct, it just strengthened my respect.  There's no way the McCain I've grown to know would have chosen her.  You could easily see that he would have preferred... uh... anyone really, over Palin, as his running mate.

The reason he chose her and the reason he backed down from so many issues he previously supported is he realized he could not be nominated without the support of far right conservatives.

The problem the GOP is belatedly realizing is their support of the far right has weakened the party rather than strengthening it.

Yes, but for me.........if a man cannot stand up for himself there.........he sure as hell shouldn't be trying to lead a country. He couldn't even lead, his own campaign.

Myself, I found the spectacle of the bloke desperately trying to endear himself to the neocon wing of the Republicans by trashing most of the more centrist values he'd been pushing in 2000 utterly repugnant. Picking caribou Barbie as his running mate didn't do much besides adding another cherry on top of the very toxic trifle he'd already whipped up by doing that.

(As BKSir says, the fact that he spent his whole campaign bleating on about his military service while planning to cut spending on veterans was pretty disgusting as well.)
