"By the spring, the McCain campaign had reportedly sent scouts to Alaska to start vetting Palin as a possible running mate. He was pissed. It wasn’t what he wanted.” Another friend disputed this, characterizing McCain’s mood as one of “understanding resignation.”

Quite frankly, it makes far too much sense. I'm very familiar with Sen. McCain. I may not like him, but, he's never been a stupid man. The moment Palin arrived on the scene, it's precisely what he became. In many ways, it seemed like he was throwing the whole election from that moment on. He just suddenly became a blabbering lunatic. And then, his concession speech. That was classic, eloquent, intelligent McCain. He has, if not always, at least normally, done what he feels best for the country. Even if it meant him losing position or face. It seemed that when they dropped her onto his lap, he knew right then and there that he had to lose. Que the funny faces, the "my friends", the various idiotic shenanigans. All the things that were patently not McCain. Again, I may not like him much, or agree on his stance on a lot of things, but, I did always have a good amount of respect for him.
