He's gone now. But he, too, was a lifelong Republican, and a United States Marine. Kinda gives you a clue why some Republicans aren't very happy with their party these days, don't it. And, I might add, the kind of people who are being slurred when "Republicans" are ridiculed and shit on as a class.

They are being ridiculed "as a class" because the Republican Party this gentleman joined bears no resemblance to the Republican Party that has been co-opted by Christian conservatives and the far right who stand against everything he just said.

Status: offline 		Thanks for posting this, Ken.  So many on the left would froth at the mouth to deny that this brand of Republicanism even exists at all.  I hope it takes them days to wise about selling an alternative to what the Dems are selling.  It's an attractive package for those who still want all the ideals, but have no faith left in more and more government being the only path to the goal. 

And, within the 48, I'm about as far from Maine as one gets!

I never denied that this type of republican existed. I just am sorry that that type of republican is so far from the power base of what the party has become. If it was, there might have been some choice come election time.

Status: offline 		We are a long way from the days of Margaret Chase Smith, Republican Senator from Maine who was instrumental in getting the 1964 Civil Rights Act passed with the addition of sex to race and religion.

The Senate was about to not include it when someone against it stood up and said something along the lines of he had always thought of women as soft and needing protection. Margaret Chase Smith stood up and said that she had always thought the same of men "And I hope Senator, you have not been as disappointed as I have". With a wave of laughter, the bill passed protecting the rights of women.

Can you imagine her being welcome in the modern Republican party?

Status: offline 		I'm from the state next door, I'm not sure why this would have any special relevance to those in Maine that it doesn't have to the rest of us since fortunately it's already passed: Maine the fifth state to allow gay marriage. I'm just sad that they beat NH to it, I think by about a month.

To the OP, good link. And it is a good link regardless of whether one supports same sex marriage or not. Just as it would have been a good link had he spoken out against it. Why? Because he fought for this country, defended this country, and is exercising his right as a citizen of this country. To often such people are blasted into silence by those seeking only others who support their side of a debate. Though honestly, I don't there's much debate left here. It's mostly a matter of pointing fingers, casting blame, castigating, and figuring out different ways to dislike one another while toting the anti-hate banner.

It is relevant to Maine because they have a ballot proposal to ban equal marriage.

Now, explain to me how it is "stereotyping" Christian conservatives and those on the far right to say they are against gay marriage.

Was there some major policy change I missed and they are now marching arm-in-arm in gay rights parades?

Congressional Democrats have not said they will push the issue. Some prominent officials, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), support same-sex marriage, while others, such as Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.), say marriage should be between a man and a woman.

I never meant to imply that all Republicans were against it or that all Democrats favored it.

Only what I said.

You have a certain constituency within the GOP that is influencing the entire direction of the party.

I have to question your logic on this one, Kirata. One does not choose their race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Nor can these things be changed. One's religion and one's political affiliation are choices. Therefore, while one cannot say that just because someone is black, he finds the actions of all blacks to be ethically tolerable, one can say that by being a member of a political affiliation, the person finds the actions of that political affiliation to be at least tolerable.
