Bad science.

1. They claim a dog eats a pound of meat a day.  Dog food is mostly cereal with meat flavoring.

2. They claim it takes 43 square meters (essentially, yards) to produce two pounds of chicken a year.  That has to be for free range chickens, and ones that are allowed to live for a couple of years before slaughter.  They evidently did not allow for chicken coops.

3. The concept of an ecoprint or whatever is how much land is required to produce something.  If a chicken does have the luxurious space claimed, then the land can be used for other things, such as producing energy.

And don't get me started about how this article ignores the concept of energy quality, as espoused by Amory Lovins.

I long for the days when journalists actually understood the field and asked questions, instead of printing blather without thinking.

The amount of space per chicken may include the area needed to grow the food to support the chicken. That's the only way i can think of that that number would come close to making sense.

I don't like dogs. Now I know why.

I've never liked SUVs. No wonder.

Gotta go...my husky is eating less than 1/4 of what this says she's supposed to be eating...

Places to shit, carbon to emit.

[Edited to add--the article ignores that large dogs hunt down, chase and kill millions of SUVs each year. Without this natural control, these guzzlers would not only proliferate, destroying the planet, but would die by the side of the road from gas starvation each winter. In fact, I've always had dogs, and we've never even seen an SUV on our land!]

Oh dear, I currently have two dogs, one cat and two horses. Not to mention two compact (but one is a sports......zoom zoom) cars, and a 4 wheel drive truck. Imagine how horrible I am!!

However, every time I try to count the number of trees in my yard I tend to lose count.."did I already count that one or no?" and plant on average, one new one a year. Am I offsetting anything?

I live as frugally and heathily as possible. My dogs are better company than 90% of the people I know. I vote we start knocking off some of the inbred rednecks (thosoe that drive everywhere in their 4 wheel drives, hold mud runs, think a weekend of fun involves camping around a blazing campfire and playing in the river bottom with their ATVs) and feed them to the local coyotes and pig farms.

You frugal?

hahahahaha!

$300 boots.

Care to elaborate HOW you are frugal?

or is it a case that you are frugal in some areas and decadant on other areas. ?  (as I am)

I have never paid $300 for a pair of boots. I have craved a $300 pair of boots. The only way I will purchase those boots is if they go on sale.

I could give a list of all of the ways I am frugal but it would be too long a list. Unless you beg really prettily.

So, unh, on sale at 20% off, a $240 pair of boots?

Actually, for me....it would probably take a discount of about 60% before I would bite. Besides, the duct tape is still holding on the old ones I've had for almost 20 years.

Is that frugal enough for you PA?

I would rather buy one 300 dollar pair of boots that last me years and years and years, are comfortable, well-fitting and never go out of style than end up spending more than 300 on cheaper 30 dollar pairs over the same period of time. Less material is used as well since it's just one pair. Smarter buy as far as I'm concerned.

That whole article has the pawprints of those nutbags from PETA all over it.  Remember them?.. the folks who want ALL domesticated animals extinct?

They've stolen nothing from me. But they are far too misinformed and militant to be realistic. Some of the sensationalistic propaganda they put out is beyond ridiculous.

Yeah..I bet PETA is mad at me now.
I made a new masterpiece today..of a frightened chick which then got eaten. I bet it will break many hearts. One may consider what were the rights of the poor little chick, and how cruel the human being is to actually murder the poor little thing....and how dare I to take its tragical story and turn it into a state of the art...by doing that I'm probably violating the respect a late chick shall have as he goes to meet his fate and creator.
