BKSir -> I Remember... (10/22/2009 8:37:18 PM)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who will just be sitting around and get a fun memory of times gone by, of the little things that, when they come to mind, cause me to smile, just because.  I think it would be fun to get a little thread running for things like that.  I'll start, so we have an idea of what I'm talking about here, k?  K! [:D]

I remember back in the day, going school shopping at Woolworth's Dept. Store, and running into all the other kids and moms there, and after a while of wading through the crowds, mom and I would stop at their lunch counter, and I'd have a grilled cheese sandwich and bowl of soup, and if I was behaving myself, a nice thick piece of cheesecake.

How about you?  What do you remember?

Termyn8or -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 9:11:34 PM)

Fast cars.

I mean even before I could drive. Standing at the back of the front seat watching the tach go about halfway up before the clutch came up. Once I was slammed into the seat with considerable G force you couldn't get the smile off my face with a chainsaw. It wasn't the speed, it was the acceleration.

Pepsi machine.

Yes I remember I drank that ________. There was a Pepsi machine, had six selections I think, all Pepsi. The difference was how cold. The coldest, once opened would freeze due to the release of pressure. I literally watched the ice crystals grow. I also found out it takes the fizz out, so I had to switch to a less extreme option. Level three was OK.

Our first color TV.

I screwed it up so bad twisting the knobs in the back. That was nothing compared to when I got the back off. They don't put any knobs in the back anymore.

CKLW.

Need I say more ? They used to be the best radio station of all time, hands down.

The first time I got drunk.

I don't think that one needs any explaination.

There is alot more, but I have to go somewhere this month so there is not enough time.

There was a night when my Dad woke me up at 2 in the morning and took me outside to see the Northern lights. It was so cold the air hurt to breath, so quiet you could hear the limbs in the trees creaking with their coat of ice. He held me all wrapped up in a blanket and we just watched the lights together. That is one of my favorite memories.

Great thread!!

BKSir -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 9:24:23 PM)

CKLW?  I remember KOMA, good ol' koma oklahoma, back when it was still on AM and you could hear all the "oldies" on that station clear across the country from OK.  Now we have all this digital crap that needs a repeater tower every 30 feet or whatever.  Pfft.  You can keep it.

The pepsi machine... I miss the soda machine that was in the city hall where I lived.  Yeah, we had the new ones about town with cans and the like, whatever...  This one cost 25 cents, you got a glass bottle out of it that would completely frost over when it hit the open air, the Dr. Pepper was at just that PERFECT temperature.  You know what I mean, there's nothing like it at that temperature out of a glass bottle, AND you'd get a nickle for returning the bottle!

Northern lights...  wow... I've only seen them a little bit, never been far enough north to catch their full splendor, but what I did see, just a little whisp of a ribbon across the sky once in a while, is amazing enough to make me so jealous of you.  Even the little string of plain white light I saw put all the pictures and video in the world of them to shame.  It's just simply not something that can be captured right.  I can understand why that would be a favorite memory.  It's a great one!

HatesParisHilton -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 9:32:33 PM)

sexy naughty nazzzzzty horror films that didn't need axes to heads or anorexic bimbos getting the chop.

I remember script that actually kept you interested.  as opposed to no script as long as we do flashcutting fast enough to make tardo teens pay attention to the film instead of the 18 dumb-ass text messages they just got in the last 11 minutes that have nothing m,uch more than "UR SW88T" and such mindless crap.

Ohhhh,  I remember sexy gog-go girl bangs with Liz Taylor eyeliner !

I remember when women had ASSES and got money from men for HAVIN' DAT AZZZZZZ instead of spending twice that money on LOSIN' DAT AZZZZZZZ....

I remember REAL animation versus derivative whore-to-the-software-crap.

I remember when people could actually PAINT.

and more.

GOOD THREAD, BK!!

The first movie we watched on cable..."the Towering Inferno". My dad got it installed when mom and I were on vacation with her family.

We watched on the Heathkit tv dad and I built.

And he always woke me up to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid no matter how late...even on school nights!

Oh god yes, real animation!  God bless Mr.'s Jones, Blanc, Freeling(x2), Fleischer, Stalling, Hannah, Barberra, Avery, Harris and Jones again because he was just that awesome. [:D]

Feed the Kitty, man, I LOVE that one.

Back when 7 minutes of funny cartoons meant days of blood, sweat and tears, and worth every single hand drawn frame.

EDIT:  Because my brain farted and I somehow forgot Clampett, Campbell, Harmon and Ising (yes, those were really their names).

sunshinemiss -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 9:51:52 PM)

I remember the very first movie I ever saw in a movie theater - Grease!

I loved it so much that I saw it a second time, and I got in trouble for it.  But it was worth it!  I remember thinking that I saw things the second time that I didn't see the first.  It was so magical!

Good topic BK.

I did no such thing!  He's right there between the Freelings and Stalling.  Ya big silly.  And yes, I LOVE his popeye.  The mumbling under his breath constantly, making smartass little cracks that should have NEVER gotten by the censor boards!  Classic, to a T!

HatesParisHilton -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:10:52 PM)

oh, and so he is!

ALSO, Da Big F Man was the FIRST to truly mix "real life" with drawn animation, as with Popeye where he created sculpted sets, shot them, and super-imposed the animated characters over them!  GODHOOD!!!!!!!

ALL HAIL DA F-MAN!!!!

YOU CAN TELL i'VE DONE FRAME BY FRAME WITH HAND-PAINTED bg'S AND VARIOUS FRAME-RATES, RIGHT?  lol

BKSir -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:14:55 PM)

Quite so, but, how mind blowing, really, was the original Jonny Quest?  The background animation in that was simply phenomenal.  I remember every time it would come on, I would hear the theme music, and everything would suddenly become instantly less important.  >.>  Still does.  [:D]

wandersalone -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:22:29 PM)

I still smile remembering going to the movies with my mum and dad and little brother to see The Sound of Music.  I was so caught up in the movie that wehn the von Trapp's finished singing their song at the concert scene I stood up and clapped.  everyone around us laughed (in a nice way) at this little girl clapping madly as if I was really in the audience.

BKSir -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:24:27 PM)

Awww!  Now that's exactly what I'm talking about here, Wanders!  A+ memory right there. [:)]

soul2share -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:25:32 PM)

I can remember when my Dad's ship would come in....going down to the docks, and seeing all those massive naval ships there.....trust me, seeing them on TV gives you absolutely NO idea of their actual size!  Especially when your 4 years old......

I can remember all those Saturday morning cartoons...the good ones before all the PC and educational crap that ruined them forever!  The Bugs Bunny show was the best!  The Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Loony Tunes, Disney stuff...now those were worth getting up early for!

Days spent just hopping on your bike and riding around town, or to the Lake; going to the school's playground and acting totally like a kid!

soul2share -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:30:20 PM)

ahhhh...movies with my parents.....we went to Disney movies on Sunday afternoons....101 Dalmations, all the ones with Kurt Russell in them, whatever was playing at the local theater.

popcorn every Sunday night......while watching the Wonderful World of Disney.  It was our little ritual......Dad popped enough popcorn to fill a big enameled roaster, and we'd all watch TV.  Our family favorite was the nature films they'd have.  Those were so cool!

HatesParisHilton -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:39:07 PM)

AHHHHH yes, JQ 1966...

BEST

ANMATION YEAR

EVVVVAHHHH!

Alex Toth, at his BEST (although Space Ghost, JEM, I tells ya!)

other fond recollections so the girls don't yawn us outta the room...

seeing REAL msicals in the THEATRE, both films and stage, like THE WIZ (better without Jackson, no offense) and The Jungle Book (great songs in the Jungle Book!)

also, cheap water wings.  man, I did not really need them, but I LOVED my cheap-ass plastic/vinyl water wings.  the kind on yer biceps.

wandersalone -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:43:26 PM)

smiles.... this is such a cool thread BK, hugs to you for starting this

My family used to watch the wonderful world of Disney on sunday evenings as well!

My little brother and I and three neighbourhood kids had a little gang and we had a cubby house in our back yard and secret signals and code words and everything.  We planned our careers for when we were grown ups and they would be pilots and I would be the air hostess (since I was the only girl).  One of the kids lived in a house with a beautiful over-grown yard and we used to pretend we were bunny rabbits and would all be found hopping through the garden...... grins, I can still remember how much fun we had doing that

HatesParisHilton -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:47:19 PM)

those rare occasionas with Donald and his nephews with guest appearances by Goofy!  PRICELESS!

I even recall the song from the ...

"The Magica World of Walt Disney is PROULDY brought to you by...

MUTUAL of OMAHA is PEOPLE,
you can COUNT on
When the goin's ROUGH..."

sleazybutterfly -> RE: I Remember... (10/22/2009 10:47:19 PM)

I remember when mamaw and I used to get the fresh fallen snow and fix it in cups to eat. I remember standing in the kitchen with her while she mixed up cookies and she would get after me when I stole the raw cookie dough.

I remember mud pies, and having to use my imagination in order to play. I think kids miss out being able to nurture theirs anymore.

I remember one morning before work, I begged my dad to take me on my big brothers dirt bike. He gave in and we crashed..he had a huge rip in his armpit and had to change before work. (The only memory I have of him and I doing anything together, I was 5 or so)

I remember one Christmas morning hearing something in the living room, I cried and cried because I thought it was Santa Claus, but when I woke the next day there was a huge bear in bed with me that mom had put there.

I remember my big bro teaching me to ride a bike with no training wheels by pushing me down a huge hill in the backyard. I crashed, but it worked..so I guess I forgive him.

I remember crawling into bed with my mom and feeling like that was the safest place on earth.

Thanks for allowing me the trip down memory lane, maybe I need to do that more often :)
