Just a start - and it's for our own good, of course.

quote:

FCC commissioners support open Internet rule

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO, Oct 22 (Reuters) - U.S. communications regulators voted unanimously Thursday to support an open Internet rule that would prevent telecom network operators from barring or blocking content based on the revenue it generates.
The proposed rule now goes to the public for comment until Jan. 14, after which the Federal Communications Commissions will review the feedback and possibly seek more comment. A final rule is not expected until the spring of next year. "I am pleased that there is broad agreement inside the commission that we should move forward with a healthy and transparent process on an open Internet," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.
...

The rule would prevent operators from discriminating against any legal content a third party wants to deliver to consumers on their networks, though it allows for "reasonable" network management to unclog congestion, clear viruses and spam, and block unlawful content like child pornography or the transfer of pirated content.

This is actually a triumph for those who favor a free flow of information. The FCC rule would disallow ISP's regulating traffic to specific websites unless those sites were breaking very specific laws (child porn and IP theft).

It could be a good thing so  long as the FCC isn't given too much control. I thought the United States just recently gifted control of the Internet to the UN or some other international body.

So where does 'scrubbing the internet' come into play here? If they're able to negate records of Bush going AWOL and Obama being born in Kenya, wouldn't that fall under a less-than-transparent internet? What are everybody's thoughts on this?

You might just want to do some research on the matter and then come back and discuss it. I certainly have no interest in explaining net governance to you.

Currently no one, anywhere, controls "The Internet";
however, YOUR internet provider DOES have the ability to control what comes over the wires to your modem. The fuss over the "open access" is due to concerns that some cable providers were shutting off competing product. Most cable providers are NOT operating under "free markets"; most cable providers are legal, regulated monopolies, and enjoy complete stranglehold over their subscribers- that would be you and me.

The "Net Neutrality" is intended to make sure providers are forced to provide anything a customer wants, with the aforementioned exceptions of illegal stuff.

Basically, it is like an open mike free forum- in order to make sure the forum stays free and not hogged by one party, the government needs to control it; ironically, free speech requires rules to stay free.
Here is a good link to both sides of the debate:

OK - so the headline of the article is, "FCC commissioners support open Internet rule", and the thread title is "FCC Wants to Regulate The Internet." Thank god I took the trouble to read the linker article before running into the bathroom to slit my wrists.

Is this related to H.R. 3458?

If so it's very much a good thing that it is getting support.

My mind reels with the amount of crap I would (and have) taken for less pot stirring spins than this in thread titles. But I suppose it's ok when conservatives do it. I shall just lay me down and weep.

It is an FCC regulation that is being enacted to require open access by telecom providers.

Ironically it doesn't. Regulation and control implies privilege. Reread the Bill of Rights.

Actually it does in this case. Without the new FCC rule an ISP could set its routers to deny its customers to collarme and only allow access to alt, because the folks behind alt paid the ISP for access, for instance.

Sanity, the internet was developed and paid for using Taxpayer Dollars therefore it belongs to the American People.
The "U.N." couldn't organize a one car parade.

sorry Sanity, but just like with many movies and TV shows, USA prefers to follow a leaky ship while thinking they are "in the same boat" which is not the same thing.

translation:  yanks have no guts in Hollywood or on Fox nd just regurgitate film, TV amd internet content, and they do the same thing with INTERNET FILTERING SCHEMES, that have *already failed* elsewhere, even after over 2 years of taxpayer dollars WASTED on such attempts.

1:  canada:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=Project+Cleanfeed+Canada&fulltext=Search

But ignore that and look at Australia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&redirs=0&search=Project+Cleanfeed+Australia&fulltext=Search&ns0=1

wanna know the ONLY 2 things that came out of this, when the Family First Party and super Conservatives were dumb-enough to have a go at even starting a BIDDING WAR bewtween the ISP COMPANIES for who would do it for the fed-gov't?

1:  the Cons here were humilated by EVERYONE telling them it was impossible even at ANY budget due to proxy server lists, and worse yet the cons ended up with egg on their faces the moment they were asked if the "Filter" would be able to block SPAM CRAP after slowing down Aussie internet by over 60%,

2:  It provided a backlash platform that GUARANTEED that The Australian Sex Party (think of everyone you hate, Sanity, and make them a parliamentarian paid by YOUR TAX DOLLARS) would become ratified and now we can VOTE for them anytime ANY con is dumb enough to fuck with our wallets for a rort.

interesting.  I want to clear up a typo here, but now, I can't see the "edit" button.  as in, I can't edit my post now.

edit:  I mean edit the post above this one, not this post which I *am* apparently able to edit

guess the regulation of the internet begun a few minutes ago.

please utterly disregad my post above; it's become moot since I can't even edit it now.

although since I no longer "own" the post above this one, unlike this post which I just modified, I'd prefer the post of mine above this one to be removed/deleted entirely.
