Status: offline 		Approximately 10-12 years ago I had a Sam's Club membership for a few years. It was free through work so I took it.

I found that I really didn't use it. Most of what they offered, I had no interest in buying. The things they did offer, I could get for approximately the same price at either Walmart or another discount store. Sometimes even for less if there was a sale I could take advantage of.

I cannot imagine eating the meat! Just the idea makes me shudder.

Hi divi; speaking of gas (noooo, not that kind), if one has a Kroger shopping card, then you can get 10 cents of the price of a gallon of gas. I need to check into that, too.

And while I'm thinking of it, I'm going to look into using a filter on my water faucet, instead of buying water. Gotta pinch some pennies.

Seriously, don't you raise your own, like Holly, or buy local? I can't afford that, but it isn't a bad idea if one can swing it.

Status: offline 		To be fair meat varies by location.  My folks have on by there place I wouldn't eat if I could help it  but the one Sam's Club by my work is the place I prefer to buy meat products from.

LaT...In this area Sams has a better meat dept than Walmart and the local markets, but as Tnai just said, it really varies from location to location. I was in a Sams in Texas and it was foul!!!

Most of the beef I get in bulk, locally. My boss has a childhood friend that we purchase a beef from and split. It is much less expensive per lb.........the whole thing ends up averaging out less per pound than medium priced ground beef......and OMG, I cannot describe the difference in taste quality. I swear if I had to eat what passes for beef in areas of the country outside the midwest I would not eat beef.

I've also purchased a lamb from him and slaughtered it myself. Which is rather misleading but the whole story is beside the point.

Pork, well I am in Iowa. I have multiple options and all of it is fresh, grown locally, and butchered locally. Chicken I get in the grocery store because, again, it is grown and butchered locally.

The meat I purchase in the grocery store, I watch for sales. We have a local chain, Fareway, that has the BEST meat of any chain grocery, bar none. Even the high priced whole foods and co-ops in Iowa City do not have better meat than Fareway. And they have good sales. Recently I bought $30 of pork roasts for $ .99 a pound and tossed them in the freezer. Last month I bought a whole pork loin for a great price. I just cut it up, packaged it, and froze it, when I got it home. Now I have meat for quick stir fries, pork loin chops, and a small loin roast, sitting in my freezer. Yesterday I got a great deal on some fresh chicken hindquarters (my favourite part to grill) at $ .79 a lb. Just tossed them in the freezer.

Yes, Iowan's are quite fortunate to have fantastic meat at great prices. We are even seeing more and more of the exotic meats available. Buffalo is my favourite.

You'd think, with all the cattle down here, we could see some of the same benefits, but that doesn't seem to be the case

Ahh we dont have Krogers either.. I know that sams club sells water filters check their prices.. also check their bottled water


And while I'm thinking of it, I'm going to look into using a filter on my water faucet, instead of buying water. Gotta pinch some pennies.

Status: offline 		Costco will (or used to) refund your full membership fee at any time within the membership term, if you are dissatisfied in any way with their products or services. They treat their employees fabulously also, if that matters to you. I used to date a guy who worked there and he was rabidly loyal to the company. Personally, I think that says a lot about the organization.

Status: offline 		We maintain a membership at Sam's and, like others have said, if you play your cards right the cost of the membership can be made up in a short time. The main reason I go there is for Splenda. If you buy a big box of 1,000 individual packets, it ends up costing approx. half of what you'd pay for the same amount anywhere else, even Wal-Mart. You just cant' beat their price on it. I also buy mammoth containers of peanut butter, coffee creamer, maple syrup and other condiments. They get used up rather quickly around here and the price is definitely much lower.

Another wonderful discovery I made is on some of the DVD sets. My favorite show EVER is "The Wire." They sell each season there and it's like $20-$25 cheaper PER SEASON than Best Buy and other such stores. What a find!

Oh and, not to give TMI, but Playtex Tampons (88 count) also go for significantly less there than even Wal-Mart. Ya know, Level, in case you ever need to know such things

Definitely worth the membership to us................luci

I live more than an hour from both Sams/Costco-- and I shop at them both regularly. It makes sense... there are supermarkets in town, but I still like the variety and costs of the warehouse stores... and I like not having to shop as often.

Then there is the "Walmart Factor" for Sam's... when I lived in the bay area, I hated the idea of Walmart. But now I live in Socorro, NM. Walmart is the largest store, and the 5th largest employer in the county. But it's not just that it gives people jobs. Having a Wal-Mart here means that there is a source of affordable clothing and shoes... When I grew up, there were a number of kids who didn't have such things... I'm not saying that a new pair of shoes is the end all to happiness... but I am saying that it's a much better dynamic when every kid can start school with them. Not to mention, that the local WalMart (and WalMarts across America) gives our local animal shelter food. I volunteer on a regular basis at the shelter, and the reason the cats get to have wet food is because of Wal-Mart donations. So I support them back.

Status: offline 		Sams has some good deals but they are just like every place else. They have 'loss leaders'. Know just what you could be paying someplace else. They make money for a reason. They don't give the stuff away.

Status: offline 		For one person it's a lot. I think if you have more than one person I think it's fantastic for paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent etc.. if you have kids it's great for school lunches and things like that.

Actually if you hit Costco at the right time, they do give away samples. Just circle the freezer department a couple time and you have lunch. If your lucky there will be drink lady there to wash it all down.
