I shop at Sams for the New Zealand lamb, the rotissary chickens, the rotissary ribs, the TP, the paper towels, the tortillas, the milk, the eggs (usually give my kids one carton), the cereal etc etc etc.

There are only two of us, but buying things that don't spoil such as laundry and bathroom stuff makes sense. In the local Sams the meat is excellent - the ribeyes are wonderful!, and you know, i can force myself to eat steak twice in one week. [:D]

I think it is well worth the membership price. Plus they sell petrol.

Level -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/24/2009 6:39:04 PM)

I think ribeye 7 nights a week sounds good.

Level, i think i love you, you meataterian you!

[;)] I actually eat a carnivorous diet, so "meatatarian" is a good name, I suppose.

I wanted to mention that BJ's allows you to use coupons. You can even 'double' up... if BJ's offers a coupon on a product - say papertowels and your sunday paper carries a coupon on the same product - you can use them both.

We have Costco - Sams and a BJ's - the ability to use coupons on the items I buy - made the difference.

I wonder if Sam's does that?

DomMeinCT -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/24/2009 8:52:16 PM)

Before you pay for a membership at any of the warehouse stores, call them and see if they have any discounts or extended memberships (3 months free) with affiliated organizations like AAA or your employer.  My company has discounts for employees for both membership and 3 months free.

Another way you can cut your costs is to share a membership with a relative.  Some warehouse stores allow 2 people share a membership with a relative, even if you're not in the same household (they just don't advertise it).

sasseeNshy -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/24/2009 8:59:12 PM)

The concern I always had with Sams or Costco.........was if there is only a family of 2 or 3, more food seemed to be wasted....While good buys, and the meat at Costco is awesome, it adds up to huge losses, if you are not consuming the entire purchase....the best bang for my buck seems to be the local specials at any variety of grocery stores...besides I'm a freak for freezer burn............grin

CalifChick -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/24/2009 9:01:13 PM)

Food sealers go a long way towards preventing freezer burn.  It's not like you're going to store it for a year (well, we won't mention that turkey in the bottom of my freezer, now will we...).

Hey Cali.........I'm mum on the turkey, the ground chuck, the fish and the pork...........I see nuthin........laughs (I gots a phobia.....if it is in the freezer for 2 months, I ain't eating it)....an expensive phobia

I don't buy much meat at Costco, occasionally when I'm having a big cookout or dinner party but not otherwise. What I buy most frequently at Costco is cat litter, toilet paper, paper towels and staple canned goods. I usually check their prices for other purchases I make as well.

this is what we've done in the past and it works out well.  also, their prices on photo developing are fairly decent.  I like to do the upload at home and then pick them up there later in the day.  they also do those photo Christmas cards too.

MsFlutter -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/25/2009 4:33:18 PM)

I had concurrent BJ'S, Sams Club and Costco memberships because the stores in this area also sell gas.

BJ's impressed me the least so it was the first membership to lapse.Sam's soon followed because I was most impressed with Costco. Sam's is just an extension of Walmart and I couldnt see keeping a membership basely solely on their baklava. Costco gas is always 6 cents/gallon cheaper than anyone else, the auto store has everything I need for my vehicle, and I'm impressed with the meats and fresh veggies and the customer service. Costco is the membership I will be keeping.

SDFemDom4cuck -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/25/2009 6:01:46 PM)

Hi Level!

I miss Costco! Here there is Sam's which I hadn't used much previously. I called and they offered me a free membership day for shopping along with 20% off my shopping that day. Love their pork loin because I can cut into roasts and chops however thick I want and then food seal and freeze. Mine even cut the prime rib I bought for Easter for me although I think that varies from place to place. Perhaps I was just persuasive and charming.

I buy my EVOO  there as well as TP, Paper towels, etc. Books are usually pretty inexpensive if I just can't wait for it to come in at my local book exchange place.  Yes the bulk amounts are a lot for one person but I never run out and I've learned to store things creatively like under the bed or in empty suitcases if it won't go in the freezer.

Perhaps there is someone in the area that will split the cost of the membership with you as well as the bulk food amounts and their cost? Invest in a stand alone freezer and a food saver vacuum type system. I can even pkg chops with marinade, vac seal and freeze so they'll marinate while they thaw later.

Just take a calculator and notebook with you so you can compare unit prices between there and your regular grocery store. Let us know how it went.

Hi Jo; I'm going to talk to my boss in the morning, I'm wondering if I might be able to do something with Sam's, being a county employee. And yes, I need a good freezer; my God, I wish I had the monster we owned when I was growing up, I could fit a whole freaking cow in there. [:)]

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/25/2009 7:22:52 PM)

Yup today only at Sam's ClubI had two little pieces of pastries featuring their dry cranberries, they were awsome and so tasty, and then I had a little piece of biscotti, then I had a slice of apple.

Actually if you hit Costco at the right time, they do give away samples. Just circle the freezer department a couple time and you have lunch. If your lucky there will be drink lady there to wash it all down.[:)]

Speaking of Cow...My bil went in on a half cow earlier this month. He said he will be bringing me a box of goodies in the next week or two when it is ready for p/up. Yeah Beef!!!

Level -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/25/2009 7:44:10 PM)

It's whats for dinner! [:D]

Very good score, Jo; I wish some of my relatives would bring me something like that.

SDFemDom4cuck -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/25/2009 7:49:42 PM)

LOL I told him earlier that I would dig having the neckbones if he wasn't doing anything with them. He looked at me like I was crazy. I use them for my gravy along with pork neck bones. I'm sure I'll get a roast and some ribs as well even though I'm not a big bef rib fan aside from the short ribs.

I bet Sam's offers discount for your employer if not a free membership.

Level -> RE: Sam's Club-type shopping (10/25/2009 7:55:33 PM)

I could have swore I heard her talking about a discount, so yeah, keep your fingers crossed on that one.

Ever make stock with bones? That's on my short list of things to do.
