BARCHA, Afghanistan (Reuters) – U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Tiffany Jones chews tobacco, spitting the juice into the Afghan desert as she talks, and wears her M-16 automatic rifle slung across her chest just like her male colleagues.

Jones wanted to be a sniper but, like many women on active service in the U.S. military, she has never been outside "the wire" -- the heavily guarded razor-wire perimeter of her base.

"I don't think the American public on a whole is ready to hear about females in the military getting blown up and their body parts everywhere," Jones said.

Still, Jones said she would like to see more women in combat.

That reminds me on a woman in Germany about 10 years ago who made a huge fuss about that women should also have the right to fight in the army...she got her right...but then was never interested to join the army anyway...what an attention whore that was IMO [>:]

For me it does not matter if man or woman, whoever wants to be in the army and would be able to do the job should be able to go.

A few years ago there was also a little debate on the papers here where british soldiers crossed a waterline (whatever that is called) and then were captured from whatever country it was as they were on their grounds with no permission...there some papers were making a huge fuss about "the poor female soldier, she has a little daughter at home..."...well, quite frankly, as others pointed out, there are many men out there who also have their little kids at home, no need to give her any more sympathy just because she is a woman (that captured group were 1 women and 6-8 men)...it was her choice to join the army in the first place, nobody forced her I suppose...

Sounds to me like Tiffany Jones has a death wish.

While the "assumption" is that the American public may not be ready to hear about it, female members of the military ARE getting blown up, no matter where they are.  With all the technology that is used by everyone, there are NO front lines anymore.  When someone can fire a missle that can cover miles instead of feet, all lines disappear.  And ingenuity has provided a very real threat to anyone....ask any transportation person there....IED's on the roadway make convoys extremely dangerous...do you hear anyone telling the women truck drivers that they can't do their job?  Not too mention suicide bombers......hell, they are walking right up TO our service members and "blowing their body parts all over the place".

And I think most Americans know that.  The problem lies with the military itself.....even today, the powers that be refuse to accept the idea that a woman is just as good as a man in any position.  They seem to feel that because we have wombs, that makes us weak, and we need to be "protected."

When I was in the service, the PT standards were different for women than the men, but I'll tell you what...everyone of us females worked for the male goal...and made it with no problem.  Some of us even bettered the males scores!  We recieved the same training that the men did, the only score differences were in PT....physical training, for anyone going "HUH?".  However, we all did the same PT drills, right along with the guys.

And I was a military police officer in 1981......Christ, I had to take a beer bottle in the head that was meant for a male partner before I was even considered "good enough" to be a partner.  It didn't matter that I dove right into any situation, that I had the same training that the men did....but women "can't be cops".  And that thinking is even still out there, thanks to the good ol' boy's club.  On my first call for a domestic, I was met at the door by the drunk, pissed off husband with a shotgun.....my male partner dropped his gun and hollered "Don't shoot!"....my only decision then was who to shoot first!  Thank God for my backup!

Again, having a dick does not make one better at any job!  And not having one does not make us frail little things that can't handle themselves.

I chose "Let 'em fight" but that said wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to have this debate because there would be no need to send anyone to fight wars hence also choosing "War, what is it good for" option.

Zephy, that would be the ideal, for sure. War is madness.

FR, after read thru

Um, okay, I chose the pacifist choice, me & Marvin Gay . . . . . . .

But, I do feel compelled to point out that a certain amount of this kind of 'extreme gender role' conversation is based on a certain haziness about the concept that individual data points vary widely . .. . .

Just as it is beyond obvious that there are guys who are really really not into being warriors, it is similarly evident that there are women who are more macho than thou & who get off on all the guns & etc of the military & who will thrive & succeed in those settings & will be stifled & less productive in more femme occupations . .. . Er, well, at least it's clear to me . . . . . . .

I'm with soul2share, women ARE getting blown up. My daughter in law and son met when they were assigned to be part of a response team during their last deployment to Iraq. They had the enviable job of being part of the convoy that monitored the radio and then went out to respond to emergency situations as they were called in. She went outside the 'wire' just about every day whenever there was a call for help, sometimes several times a day. They were blown up, no ifs ands or buts about it. More than once. Other people on their team lost body parts, it could have just as easily been the two of them. She made the decision to be in the Army as did my son and she does whatever is required of her. She says it's all she's ever wanted to do, there's never been any other career choice in her mind.

My response to the poll was let women fight AND what the hell is war good for? I definitely have mixed feelings. I'm proud of my family members in the military but I'd also love for them to be out of danger.

devilishpixie -> RE: Female marines: We want to fight (10/24/2009 7:23:05 PM)

I voted let them fight, the reality is men and women have a right perhaps even an obligation to protect their homes and countries in my eyes. Bullets and bombs don't care what sex you are so they are already in harms way and many are already dying.

A Marine is a Marine. I am one, I know many good male and female ones. Semper Fi to them, and Happy comming Birthday. Respect a Marine no matter what sex they are, that makes no difference females can snap a neck just as fast as a male. And, are tained to just as we are.

Thought-provoking comments, I appreciate them.
