New York,New York a place so great they had to name it twice......

It's an all right burg to visit but great? Chicago on the other hand is the greatest city I have ever had the pleasure of spending any time in. The only thing NY has that we don't is winning baseball teams but I'll keep the Cubs and Wrigley over that abomination they are calling Yankee Stadium.

Hell Servant...what do you get...about a 6 week window for using that pool?

servantforuse -> RE: Buy New York for 85M (10/24/2009 4:37:20 PM)

6 weeks, are you kidding. We had 8 weeks this summer. I think it was because of global warming. Maybe in 10 years we'll be able to swim all summer.

TheHeretic -> RE: Buy New York for 85M (10/24/2009 5:12:42 PM)

Just too many people, in too small an area, for me to tolerate, no matter how cultured some fraction might believe themselves to be.

I was quite a bit younger than a young man when I lived in NYC, Mike.  The impressions that have remained with me most strongly are the claustrophobic crush of humanity on all sides, and the separation from nature.  Those cages around the trees remain very symbolic of my feelings about the place.  The big whale hanging from the ceiling of the museum was cool.

servantforuse -> RE: Buy New York for 85M (10/24/2009 5:20:38 PM)

Chicago is nice. We come down on the train every once and a while. To expensive down town though. It's half the price for everything 90 miles North in Milwaukee.

slvemike4u -> RE: Buy New York for 85M (10/24/2009 6:13:30 PM)

I refuse to be drawn into an argument with some rube extoling the virtues of a city that bills itself as a second banana....
Chicago isn't and never will be New York...and the only thing positive to say about the Cubbies and the White Sox is they know when to go play golf and let the real(ie:The Yankees,Red Sox et al)teams carry on in the playoffs.[:D]

servantforuse -> RE: Buy New York for 85M (10/24/2009 6:28:21 PM)

Chicago has taller buildings than New York.

LOL...okay Panda I get it.....New Yorks charms aren't for everyone.....I do hope my post's extolling the virtues of New York are being taken in the spirit intended....totally tongue in cheek.[:)]

Oh, god, yeah. And likewise, of course. I've got nothing against the people who live in New York. Somebody's got to do it, or the place would go to shit. I'm just glad there are a sufficient number of volunteers so the rest of us don't have to take turns, you know? Besides, it's a perfect way to keep 90% of the world's Yankee fans rounded up in a relatively small area, so the rest of us don't have to rub against any of them too often!

I absolutely love Chicago, but I could never live there, either. As beautiful and exciting a city as it is, it's still too urban for me. I dated someone who lived there years ago, and she wanted me to move down, but I just couldn't do it. Terrific place to visit, though.

Panda,

There's only one thing to say.

And none of those sneaky Panda moves.

I'll take the Midwest any day. My $220,000.00 house with inground pool would get me about 400 square feet of space in New York. Ive been there 4 times for short visits. You can keep it. It is still a lot better than LaLa land on the other coast though.

Really? You like NY better than LA? That's surprising, from a fellow Wisconsin guy. There's a lot to be said for a city that's got no fewer than 4 mountain ranges in it - or is it 5?

Last time I was out there, I spent a lot of time hiking in Griffith Park, and climbed the mountain several times. One day, I decided to take a different trail back down to the observatory, and it didn't go where I thought it would. Twisted back around the other side of the mountain, and even though I knew where I was, I had absolutely no idea which trail led back to the observatory. So there I am, in the middle of the largest city in the United States - Hollywood on one side of me, Burbank on the other - and I'm lost in the fucking mountains. That's my kind of city.

I love it so much, I think it's highly likely I'll be living there within a year, if I'm still in the US. Either there or San Francisco, which is a little more densely populated than LA, but still... 5 miles the other side of the Golden Gate, you've got Mount Tam, and there aren't many cities that have that kind of access to such wild, rugged places. California rocks!

Oh, cripes, I haven't seen that in a long time. I've got to bookmark it this time, because it completely cracks me up every time I see it. Thanks, man!

And Chicagoans are quite happy about that. We much prefer a city where you can afford to live.

If this thread had been any more blatantly hijacked, it would be landing in Cuba right about now.

And what exactly does that have to do with Saul Alinsky, Mr. Man?

In all fairness, you kind of set it up, starting with really not a discussion topic but a statement and the eBay joke.

From that lead, everyone's just having fun. We get it---the concept is ridiculous, and what can you do but laugh.

DomImus -> RE: Buy New York for 85M (10/25/2009 8:31:19 AM)

I visited Manhattan once about three years ago. It was Labor Day weekend. We had a wonderful time and I'd love to go back again and spend some future Labor Day weekend there. We arrived Friday evening and left on Tuesday morning when life was back to normal. It was like I woke up in a completely different city that morning. Watching the city on a normal morning from the window of the airport shuttle back to LaGuardia I quickly tossed aside all of the thoughts I had all weekend long how nice it might be to live there. It was like watching an ant hill. Great place to visit and I love the Yankees but I could never live there.
