verity, when your short term financial crisis is over, you can go out and buy the exact one you want, with all the bells and whistles. a crock that lifts out to wash is esp nice..
In the meantime, you can amost always score a crockpot at the used store, then you have one to last you till then. As to new ones, they don't need to be that expensive, either. I saw them in my grocery this week (groceries are not famous for the cheapest prices on nonfood items, you know) for 30 and 40 dollars (two sizes) GL

My favorite low budget dish is 500 grams (shade over a lb.) of imitation crab meat (1 euro, 59 cents ), 200 grams of pasta (17 cents), small onion (15 cents) and a box of nata liquid (99 cents). I brown the onions while the pasta is cooking, add the crab when the pasta is done, add the nata liquid, folding in the pasta with a bit of salt and pepper to taste and turn the pasta until liquid is mostly absorbed. It makes four servings for about .73 cents (euro) per serving and it's just yummy!

Greetings tsatske,

That would be great, but verity comes from Germany and most second hand shops (There are not many here) do not have such things and most people have not even heard of a crock pot, slow cooker or such. The idea of their use is just taking on here in Germany, verity knows them from Australia where her mother and grandmother used them.

I got some "hydroponic" water cress from food bank the other day - well, they weren't hydroponic.  They had a clump of soil around the roots, masked by label - no problem.  I cut off the leaves, and used in a recipe calling for frozen spinach.  Way too bitter so I asked spiceguy2009 on here how to "fix" 'em.  Some sweeter spices like sweet basil and nutmeg did the trick.  Then plopped the soil and roots into an old margarine/yougurt container I had around.  Filled to soil level with water and 4 days later - I have a start on some more water cress!  Who knew?

And let me tell you - I use four different food banks - some are off schedule with me - but when I can get to them, they are okay - some are restricted to seniors, some are low income, etc.  Some have more fresh stuff than others - one is cans/non-perishable only.  But my clue for these ALL is that I sometimes say - "What items are nobody else taking?"  They are GLAD to get rid of the weird ones and often give me more than "allowed" - spinach lasage noodles - portabella mushrooms - mix for 24 pumpkin muffins - no limit on fresh beets - I took ten pounds - would've taken more, but couldn't carry them. LOL!  Boiled 'em and traded some for a gallon of  homemade spaghetti sauce with plenty of ground beef in it - added that to lasagne noodles and away we go!  Again, you MUST cook to do anything cheaply.  The freezer is your friend - "dead" meat section at local Kroger's  is "sell by today's date" at 30 % off.  Little steaks at $4 are then $2.80  Freeze that day.  Thaw a week later, cut in strips and stir fry in a little olive oil - my splurge item last week since it was on sale and I was out - with some bell peppers and onions from the garden. Serve on brown rice and two meals (easy) for what? $3.50 - or $1.75 each.

Some food banks have salad dressings (another item that most pass by) - make nice marinades for those steaks.

How much meat? I always remember "Quarter pounder with cheese"  Those little steaks are usualy 3/4 pounds and so "qualify." LOL

Locally thru the region- one can not go to more then one food bank.   They do keep a list- and doing so can get you banned.

On a crock pot- thrift stores often have them.   freecylce maybe...  they really are not that much money new in that they last for many years.

I was so mad when Ramen stopped making baked noodles, one of my FAVORITE dishes that was so quick and easy was baked ramen noodles and chopped up chicken.  It was a fast perfect and utterly cheap meal for one.

I just made a huge crockpot full of chili and it was delicious. It does not cost much to make and is yummy any time, but particularly on a cold day. A pot of this chili can last for a long time over many meals as well.

1 lb of lean hamburger
2 cans of kidney beans
2 cans of beef broth
2 cans of tomato soup
1 1/2 cup of water
1 cup of elbow noodles
half an onion
half an green pepper
chili powder, worshire sauce, fresh ground black pepper, garlic powder, Accent -1 or 2 tablespoons or as per your tastes.

Cook the hamburger and then toss all ingredients into a crockpot and let it cook for about 2 hours on high, check occasionally, then put on lower heat for 2 more hours.

Nata liquid is sort of the Portuguese version of a non-sweet, heavy cream but it's not quiet as heavy. It comes in a small box about the size of a juice box you would pack in a kids lunch.

Estah, take a look at Ebay UK. That is where I got my crockpot. Many of the vendors there will deliver to Germany, and with the pound quite low, they are affordable. Plus, keep in mind, if you buy one from the US, you will have issues with the voltage and will need to use a converter. The British stuff runs on the same voltage, and all you need is one of those travel thingies that allow you to plug your stuff into differently formed outlets. Or, if the cord is detachable, you can simply change that.

At Walmart you can get chicken in a huge bag for 10 lbs for like 5.88 or something like that. I will buy that, and cook it down in a few pots, strip it off the bone, and then free the broth, chicken and things for soups, pot pies, and whatever else I can do with chicken. It goes a real long way and can be tossed in for anything.

I also get pork roast, .99 a pound, and since there's only two of us I'll buy a bigger one, slice it in three. Free them seperately season them, put in two or three potatoes and a few carrots and bake it for a few hours. It comes out tender and delicious!

I can also make lasagna, or really any italian dish for pretty cheap.
