I'm a mutt myself, but I do strongly identify with my Native American heritage. Being associated with 3 tribes (Blackfoot, Cherokee, and Miccosukee), where my Great-Grandmother, and Grandmother both lived on the reservation in the Glades; I'm proud to be what I am. Besides the NatAm, my heritage is also a mix of 8-other nationalities from European decent. I could say "Mixed" on my ethnicity, however I marked "Caucasian" concerning this site.
As to being "American", this is to all those that were born in these here United States. A hyphenated American in my opinion, would pertain to someone who has either immigrated to this country, or has become a naturalized citizen. They would be considered __________-Americans (Irish-Americans, Indian-Americans, French-Americans...); though their offspring born in this country would be considered "American". For all intents and purposes in keeping with the topic, I agree that some may feel to say "Native American" might be considering that these people do not look at it as a Native American term but a more generalized term.
