My favorite fictional sub/slave is a relatively unknown character from an old movie called Manos, Hands of Fate (featured on MST3K) named Torgo. His knees were on backwards, and hed do anything for Manos,until he got himself killed for trying to steal Manos' 3rd wife. Or, was it his 4th, the child bride (and when I say child, the girl looked about 9)

The motivation consistently stated throughout the book was that she did it all because she loved her boyfriend (who disappears fairly early from the story). I agree, it's a bit confusing, as she is give no "comfort" but I got the feeling the author was describing someone who is a heavy emotional as well as physical masochist, with a latent exhibitionistic streak (that became less latent as time passed). For such a person, that sort of situation might work, especially if she could get what needs for emotional connection that she had met by other women or subs. With erotic fiction that is borderline pornographic, often the emotional motivations don't make a lot of sense. A.N. Rocqlaurie's "Beauty" (for reasn I expected loyalty and devotion from her but she turned into quite the little submissive swinger, until, at the end, when she met Mr. Right) made almost zero sense to me, but I loved reading about the hot predicaments she found herself in.
