The title alone is enough to provide hours of fun, but this is a MD institution and an interesting article.

King, not Queen.

XI

Personally, because there is a King and a Queen, I don't think it should have been allowed. It's one thing if there is only one catagory and it's only for one gender or the other - but when there is a catagory for both ... I see no need to do something like this.

I have no problems with females wanting to be wrestlers (around here, at least, wrestling is a male only sport) or males wanting to play volleyball (again - this is a gender specific thing around here). But to me, this is like a female trying out for the male basketball team when there is a female basketball team already - it's pointless and is designed for the sole purpose of stirring up controversy and drama.

There isn't enough information to for me to form an opinion other than what the vote called for... if she was nominated & then voted for by the students then s/he should be King.

My question is this... is 'she' a lesbian or is 'he' a transsexual. Often a person is mistaken as either gay or lesbian prior to being identified as being transsexual. If in fact this person is male identifying then by all means he should have every right to be awarded this title. High time for the world to start recognizing & accepting the fact that genitalia is not sole thing that determines gender anymore.

This is true, and something that I had not considered.

However, if the person in question identifies as a female and as a lesbian, then my opinion doesn't change.

If the person in question identifies as a male - then that is what they need to be focused on ... the fact that transgendered people are out there in society, not that a female won the title of "king"

One of the students said it made the whole thing "look like a joke", and I agree with that.

King = male
Queen= female *will the booing coming from the closet please desist"

Controversy and drama at the college level is usually a good thing/

I personaly think haveing homecomeing royalty is a joke in itself. h ow ever if she got nominated as king, and won, and ther is curently no rule agianst a girl being king other then that implied by the word king, then everyone should stop fussing over her winning and if they really dont like it make a straight up rule that only ppl of the male sex ( or ideteifing as male in the case of transgendered ppl) can run.

Meanwhile...out there in the real world...nobody really gives a fuck!

LeatherBentOne -> RE: Lesbian Beats Three Guys for Homecoming Queen (3/8/2006 7:12:54 AM)

Speaking from a lesbian's point of view, for diversity sake . . . isnt BDSM considered "diverse?" . . . why not have a gay category ie. one for gay males and one for lesbians?

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Lesbian Beats Three Guys for Homecoming Queen (3/8/2006 8:22:27 AM)

I think the fact that its based on simple numbers of votes is all that you need- more people wanted her to be king.

If they want to enact a future rule based on genetic sexuality, that's fine. But for this, it's what the people wanted.

Slipstreme -> RE: Lesbian Beats Three Guys for Homecoming Queen (3/8/2006 9:31:00 AM)

Honestly, I think that if the collage didn't want a female to run as king, they should not have allowed her on the king ballot in the first place. They did, she was picked, end of story. Whooptido. She won fair and square. Now what would match however would be a male picked as queen. [:D]

I'm all up for genderbending, and as a genderqueer myself, I don't see any negatives in this. I say let the she-king have her fun! Hell, if the SCA can let you play a gender opposite role, so can they.

Exactly.

Those who actually vote are the ones who decide things, folks, whether its at high school, college, city, or state level. Clearly those who cared enough either about making a statement or about the contest voted -- the rest are just pissed after the fact and lazy.

brightspot -> RE: Lesbian Beats Three Guys for Homecoming Queen (3/8/2006 2:20:57 PM)

Congrats to her!

Making a statement and taking the risks that she did takes a lot of Courage!

I love to see challenges in all kinds of arena's. That is where change happens, beginning to challenge what the norms of the majority are.
Even just being lesbian persay, most hetrosexuals will choose to behave as though we don't really exist or yeah "they" exist, but they are not part of My World. Until one day they discover someone they have been very close to and they love dearly is gay or lesbian, or they meet someone and have a blast hanging out with them and really think they have made a wonderful friend and then come to find this person is gay or lesbian. 'Oh now what to do?'
When it's right in your backyard and/or face, your are challenged to think what the important things really are[sm=news.gif].

Aleks -> RE: Lesbian Beats Three Guys for Homecoming Queen (3/27/2006 8:49:08 AM)

I think the problem here is that I can see the same thing happening every year because people would vote for the novelty value.
Guys would vote because "woo, lesbians! Thats hot!", anyone not straight would vote because "We have to make a political stand against the oppression, lolomgbbq!!1"
Ok so I'm male and not straight, and dont hold either of those opinions, but yay for stereotyping![:D]

Anyway, if popular media has taught me anything, isnt it usually jerks, (or was it jocks ... not up to date with American terminology) who try to win the title of king? So in that case good for her...
