I looked at that poor boy and that's not even funny. I think some body piercings are attractive. I have my ears pierced, and did have my nipples pierced at one time. I've never had a problem with my piercings. I've had genital piercings done on slave males in the past, again without complications. It's individual, people are going to do what they're going to do. Some of that looks uncomfortable and painful...and that is just looking at it!

of course there are some, but they are the minority not the majority. Thus is my point. Yes the Navel can get infected, actually one of the most common ones to get infected...but it's really very minor and is caused by rejection due to skin constriction more than actual infection from piercing or the soil collecting area.

It's all down to personal preference miss, to some body mods are cosmetic, to other spiritual, to others perhaps it is some psychological issue, though to be honest I have never encountered anyone who felt in such a way...and I would suffice to say that I'm more likley around them then you would be.

Second note, as sfgrrl mentioned, the subdermal pierce wasn't into the skull, it was resting on top of it though and in some cases of extreme trauma (car accident, etc) those piercings were known to crack into the skull, only one such reported case caused any sort of actual damage.

At one point I likely had every piercing known to man, now I just keep my septum and the can openers as they can easilly be kept out of view for when I'm dealing with corp. client sales as unfortunately you are in the majority when it comes to the misinformed, judgemental types.

Uninformed and judgemental, maybe. Unused to seeing tattoos and body piercings everywhere, definately. The troubling thing to my mind is that most of these 'fads' came right out of gangs. Why do middle class people (children in particular) want to look like gang members? Examples: wearing baseball caps backwards or sideways, tattoos, multiple body piercings, wearing clothes backwards, wearing pants that look as though they're about to fall off, do rags, and on and on. Used to be the only people you saw with tatoos had served in the armed services and got them on a dare while intoxicated. A few years ago two young guys painted our house. I'd never seen them without their shirts before. I could not believe how many tattoos they had.

When I was in upper elementary school (what they refer to as middle school now) I asked my mother if I could get my ears pierced. She said only "loose women" had their ears pierced. See how times have changed? Now, it's very common for parents to have infants' ears pierced.

I agree with MistressDREAD that it's very much a cultural thing. National Geographic used to be of great interest for those of us who had no other access to pictures of naked and nearly naked people. Remember the pictures of the tribe who put discs in women's lower lips to make them protrude? They also put them into their ear lobes so that they hung down about 3 inches. Was that the same tribe that put rings around their necks to elongate their necks? Attractive to them. It was their culture. It's also a common thing to circumcise girls in some cultures. It's just not my culture.

I don't know that I think LESS of people who choose to tattoo or pierce their bodies. I just wonder WHY they want to.

If by gang you'd like to infer ancient summerian sects...then sure. Cause I can't say I ever met a crip with a coptic cross tattooed onto him or an akkadian ank branded into his forearm let alone flanks of steel shoved through them. Maybe it was the bloods. ;)

You're on the right path for modern fashion though, but you're puttin the cart before the horse. Modern gangs derived fashion from prisions, which often dervived from long, long lines of eastern, african, and early european traditions. Prison tattooing can be traced back as long as people have been keep slaves.

Judging the many on the basis of the fashionist few isn't a likely way to get the whole story. The modern tribalists have been around since mid 50's, gaining large scale movement around mid to late 70's.

There is much more behind the actions of someone like myself, in which everything is very ritualistic than someone who goes to a Claires or Piercing Pagoda to get a gold stud bolted into their ears. (never use a gun on upper ear cart btw, always get pierced with hollow point) I guess those women in Africa must of watched a Tupac video or somethin. haha

I don't want to get too far off topic here, but clothing styles change generation to generation. My parents criticized my maxi skirts and peasant blouses, and were aghast when I refused to wear a bra! Not to mention that horrid noise (music) we listened to!! My father was a Paratrooper in the Army, and had one tattoo to symbolize that. By the time I was 18 I had three! I recall my Uncle having a slave with her nipples pierced when I was a girl. It wasn't nearly as common then, or as discussed, as it is today, but it was done. Just as chastity piercing has been around for awhile. When my son told me (about 12 years ago) that he got his tongue pierced I asked him why in the world he wanted to poke a hole in his tongue!! When my daughter told me four years ago that she wanted hers done, I found someone who would do it correctly. She still wears a barbel sometimes, and had never had a problem with it.

My mother pierced my ears when I was born. I had my daughters ears pierced when she was born. Her pediatrician did it for me. He measured, disinfected, used the gun, it took all of three minutes. It startled her, but I believe it was the pop that the gun made. She didn't cry. Likewise my grand daughters have all had their ears pierced at birth. A tradition in the family for little girls has always been their first gold earrings. Little boys get a spanking. [;)]

Last post on this. As I am not judging people for their lifestyle choices but informing of health risks, avoidable health risks. If you read the whole article, no matter what you thought of the girls IQ. What the article clearly stated was that this was not an isolated case. That anyone born with a congenital heart defect, or having any type of heart trouble, piercings can be very dangerous. And that the number of infections is greater than just the ones that self pierce. So decide if you think a piercing is worth the risk, and are you willing to invest the time and effort to caring for the wound site. Piercing the lobe of your ear takes a few weeks to heal, the cartilage with no real vascular system much much longer, and the time gets longer with each of the other unique sites. Ending with the one site that takes the most time, attention and the hardest to prevent infection. The navel takes from a year to 2 years to completely heal the wound, and if you have a herniated bellybutton it should not be pierced at all. The information is not my opinion, but the medical world. My opinion is do what you want with your own body, but be realistic and ask a physician about the risks and see if you have an undiagnosed heart disorder before piercing. Sundew
