the man was apparently PLAYING with the critter, not provoking.  If he had been provoking the squirrel, the squirrel would have laid a huge ass BITE on the guy.  And teh womans voice at the end said the squirrel does this every night.,.... Not the behavior of an animal that feels threatened or provoked....

It is no more provoking then when you 'wrestle' with a dog, or play with your cat and some dangly toy.  He obviously has a friendly relationship with the little tree-rat, else, he would have been bitten (as was said).  Further, if the squirrel really didn't like the way he was being treated, he could have easily scurried up the tree, well out of reach of the man.

Squirrels do not carry bubonic plague, they do harbor fleas that carry plague. As does any animal in those region that has fur and blood.

I have seen pet squirrels and you can buy them, but need to check local rodent laws first I'd recommend. The ones I have seen were cute, fun, but a high energy handful capable of getting into places you would not even think of.
